iPod connecting to MacBook.

I am trying to connect my IPod (Gen 4) to a MacBook 2014 to update the tunes on it. I just get the message IPod loading but no further. When I plug the IPod in a symbol pops up on screen in top right hand corner but then disappears.

I can see the IPod in Finder but cannot open it.

Anybody had this problem and resolved it.
