I've got an open new message window in Mail that won't close or allow any mouse-click instructions – i.e. I can't use the red dot or cmd-w to close and no clicks on the toolbar are registered. I've emptied the Outbox and all draft folders. Using Mail version 16 with Tahoe 26.1.

If you really are running 26.1, you should upgrade. 26.3.1(a) runs without issue on my M4 Pro Macbook Pro.
You can quickly verify your current macOS version by doing "About this Mac..." from your Apple menu:
Also, any number of unneeded aftermarket software add-ons will seriously interfere with the proper operation of your Mac. Anti-virus and so-called "cleaning" apps cause far more problems than they claim to fix.
And lately we are seeing a rash of issues with cheap VPN software messing with Macs.
Thanks Allan. I'm upgraded to 26.3.1 but still have the same problem with a non-responding window in Mail.
