Siri has lost its grip on speech to text (dictation).

What in the heck is Apple doing about Siri? This update 26.3.1 has absolutly wrecked the tiny bit of hope Siri was holding onto when it comes to speech to text (dictation). I speak with a slight southern draw but not so bad that Siri will type Homewrecker instead of hominy. I dictated this to my wife with Siri, about Siri: "There is not one sentance that you can dictate now that Siri will get right". Siri dictates this instead : "If not, one thing that you could dictate it until you get a hole, right" With my southern draw, I speak slow - not fast. This has progressively gotten worse over the last major patches.

Thank you for sharing your concerns, RealDealDaddy. 😉

Try the following steps:

NOTE: The current version of the iPhone Operating System (iOS) is version 26.4.1.

Open Settings ➢ Apple Intelligence & Siri ➢ Siri & Dictation History, then tap "Delete Siri & Dictation History".

That should give Siri a fresh start.

Need more help?

Good luck! 👋🏼😉

If your iPhone dictation consistently types "Kruse" instead of "cruise," here's how you can correct it:

  1. Train the Dictation System
    1. Use dictation in a text field (like Messages or Notes) and say "cruise."
    2. When it types "Kruse," manually edit it to "cruise."
    3. Repeat this a few times. Over time, the dictation system may learn your preference.
  2. Retrain Siri with your voice. Go to Settings > Siri (or Apple Intelligence & Siri). Tap Talk to Siri, then tap Off. Turn on “Siri” or “Hey Siri” again, then ...Change Siri settings on iPhone
  3. Add a Text Replacement
    1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
    2. Tap the + button to add a new replacement.
    3. In the Phrase field, type "cruise."
    4. In the Shortcut field, type "Kruse."
    5. Now, whenever "Kruse" is mistakenly typed, it will autocorrect to "cruise."
  4. Check Contact Names
    1. If "Kruse" is a contact in your address book, the system might prioritize it.
    2. Go to Contacts and check for any entries named "Kruse." If it's not needed, consider editing or removing it.
  5. Reset Keyboard Dictionary
    1. If the problem persists, resetting the keyboard dictionary can help:
    2. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
    3. Confirm the reset. Note that this will erase all custom words learned by the keyboard.
  6. Enable Siri Pronunciation Feedback
  7. If "Kruse" is related to Siri misunderstanding you, you can provide feedback:
      1. Ask Siri, "Who is Kruse?"
      2. If Siri shows the incorrect suggestion, say, "That's not how you pronounce 'cruise.'"
  8. Follow the prompts to correct the pronunciation.

Oh, and one more thing I left out. I will watch back to feet pipe something out. (I used to text to speech here and what I said was I will watch text to speech type something out, NO LIE)

I will type from now on - I used text to speech and watch it type my words correctly and when I send the message, Siri will change the sentence to whatever it thinks should be said instead of my dictation.

Same exact experience. It has been getting worse for awhile. I have had an iPhone since the beginning and it is beyond terrible now. Not a single sentence can be spoken that I do not need to go back and fix. I can get the "Talk to Siri" menu selection without turning off Apple Intelligence, so I just did that and retrained my voice for like the third time in a couple of months.

Absolutely! It has gone so far downhill. When I first got an iPhone many years ago, I was astonished at how well the voice to text worked. And now I’m astonished at how poorly it works. Today I said “entrepreneur”, and this is what it typed: Reneaux /ur l/.

in addition, most of the time it does not capitalize the first letter in a sentence (case in point, the first letter of this sentence). And often it will type the correct word and then change it to the incorrect word.

It’s beyond frustrating!

Choose the correct language where the name is used correclty.

Add a keyboard of the desired language and if the language is supported for dictation then dictation language is automatically added under Settings > General > > Keyboard > Dictation Language

There isn't a strict language division between "Charli" and "Charlie." Both spellings are primarily used in English.

  • Charlie: This is the more common spelling, traditionally used as a masculine name or a nickname for Charles. However, it's becoming increasingly popular as a unisex name.
  • Charli: This is a less common variation, often seen as a more feminine or creative spelling of "Charlie." It can also be a nickname for Charlotte or Charlene.

While some sources suggest a German origin for "Charli," it's not widely recognized and both spellings are considered part of the English language.

Thank you for your reply. I get what you’re saying. But I think I didn’t say everything in my original post. I’ve had an iPhone since 2009. Never once have I had to train Siri (speech to text) with generally sentences, only with unusual names. Saying that, Siri’s text to speech has progressively gone down hill in the last 2 years and now I do not even want to use it. Just today, I used speech to text and it used the word killing when I slowly and clearly said healing.

Same. Its caused my SO to be called the wrong, not even close name of other persons and also randomly said to a coworker “as your superior,” which was not even close and I am not their superior. This is very real issue. I have 17 Pro Max with iOS 26.3.1. (I read somewhere Apple is pushing speech to text processing from the cloud to the device but I am not sure if this is true.

Would be great if someone at Apple looked into this and told us what is going on.

As others have said, voice to text dictation has gotten appallingly worse. It's actually unusable and if I try to use it, I spend far too much time making corrections. Come on Apple. Take care of business. Less shiny objects and more basics that work, please. Voice dictation used to be pretty good but now I'm going to go searching for another program/app to use.

Siri has lost its grip on speech to text (dictation).
