No sounds from AirPod 4 while connected to Kindle Paperwhite

I just got a pair of AirPod 4 and connected them to a Kindle Paperwhite. They initially worked fine, but after a couple minutes the AirPods stopped producing audio. The AirPods work fine with other devices. The Kindle works fine with other headphones. But I can not get them to work together. The Kindle shows the Airpods as connected and shows that it is playing an Audible book, while no sound is coming out. How can I fix this?
