Hello,

The only way to do this is with a credit card (UK debit cards won't work) or ID, though I've heard that UK passports may not be accepted, although I could be wrong. A UK driving licence, however, will work.

I was able to verify mine based on the age of my Apple ID account, so I didn't need to provide anything further. If this is an option for your account, Apple will handle it automatically during the process. You cannot specifically request that they use your Apple ID account age.

Thanks,

There isn’t a national ID card in the uk despite Apple suggesting it. Some low I.Q.s at work implementing this.

No the UK does not have a National ID, but other regions that have passed Age Assurance laws, such as South Korea do have a National ID which is why this Support Article says a Driver's License or National ID.

  • Use an approved method: You can use a driver's license or national ID, or a credit card to confirm that you're an adult. Passports, debit cards, or gift cards aren't supported*.

The Support Article that pertains specifically for the UK says "You can confirm your age with a credit card or by scanning an ID", which in your case would be a Driver's License.

I have just gone through update on iPad and the option given to prove age is a credit card. I do not wish to add one.
i have a driving licence but there is not option to add this.
Does anyone know how I can add my driving licence to prove I am an old git!
thanks

Yes, you can skip the Credit Card option and will see on the bottom of the screen to add your ID. When doing that, make sure to let your camera scan your ID for up to 10 seconds before it will register. Good lighting and a solid background may help.

I had to help my wife with Driving Licence as she doesn't have a credit card. You have to be a bit patient and hold the licence in the box for about 5 - 10 seconds. I made sure there was a darker back ground and good lighting (kitchen counter near a window)!! There is a sort of haptic bump and then you do the reverse side.

Glad to hear you got it working. Thanks for providing that specific information. It may help some very frustrated people.

I was told by an apple representative today that they PASS your card details on to the government. I'd say that is a definite breech. They might not store it but they have GIVEN the details to a third party.

Whoever told you this was completely misinformed. People, even Apple people can be wrong. You can Google it and see that Apple does NOT pass your credit card details to the UK Government. It simply uses the card to validate you are an adult over the age of 18. That said, I would be willing to bet the UK Government has more information about you than you could imagine. Sadly, paranoia has taken over here. That's sad.

This is from a Google Search on this:

"No, Apple does not pass credit card numbers to the UK government for age verification. According to the search context, Apple states that nothing you scan or verify is stored anywhere and that Apple has NO access to anything on your phone beyond what is necessary for the validation process.

The verification is performed between Apple and your government-issued data (like the credit card details already on file) to confirm you are over 18, but the specific card number is not transmitted to government authorities.

  • Data Handling: Apple confirms that when you use an approved method like a credit card or ID, all it does is validate your age.
  • Storage: Whatever you used is not stored somewhere or accessible by anyone once the verification is complete.
  • Third Parties: Unlike some other companies that use third-party verification systems, Apple doesn't seem to be using any third-party verification systems for this process."

Asking people to provide credit card or passport is ridiculous. Is this information stored? What guarantee is there that 3rd party malware will not take advantage of this. My 22 year old scanned her passport. I was horrified that she did this. Especially when the support payed says passports are not supported.
This is a major security risk.

There's NO SECURITY RISK at all. Nothing you scan is stored anywhere. Every bit and byte of data on your phone is 100% encrypted and Apple has NO access to anything on your phone. You can scan a passport all day and it won't be stored anywhere, nor is it valid for age verification in this regard. When you do use something which is approved for age verification, all it does is validate your age. Whatever you used is not stored somewhere or accessible by anyone.

Unlike some other companies, Apple doesn't seem to be using any third-party verification systems. Everything is just between Apple and your government (which already has far more information on you). Your government issued the passport. This document explains how Apple adds a passport to Wallet (U.S.). As you can see, the information is carefully protected. Age verification is a little different as nothing is added to Wallet.

As passports are not acceptable forms of verification, her passport information didn't go anywhere; there's no need to be horrified.
