Best audio settings for recording concerts on iPhone 17 Pro

What is the best audio setting to record concerts with my iPhone 17 Pro?

I go to a lot of concerts regularly and love recording videos so I can look back on them later and relive the experience.

Since I’m using an iPhone 17 Pro, I noticed there are different audio options like Spatial Audio, Stereo, and Mono when recording. I’ve tried Spatial and Stereo, and they seem to sound slightly different, but I’m not really sure which works best in a concert setting.

I’d also like to reduce crowd noise (like people screaming nearby) as much as possible without losing the overall sound quality of the concert itself, which I’m not sure which of these settings affect.

Are there certain audio settings you guys would recommend for recording concerts? Would Spatial Audio be better than Stereo, or is Mono more reliable in these situations? And are there any other tips to avoid distortion or muffled sound?

Any advice would be really appreciated! These concerts mean a lot to me, so I’d love to capture them as close as possible to how they felt live.

There’s no one setting that guarantees perfect concert audio. Stereo is usually the best compromise, but the real improvements come from manual crowd noise isolation (using your hand or case edge), venue positioning, and — if you’re serious — external microphones placed strategically.

  1. Use Stereo as default: It captures the band’s mix more naturally while keeping crowd noise manageable.
  2. Avoid Spatial Audio in packed crowds: It exaggerates audience chatter and screams since it’s designed for immersive playback. Spatial Audio can sound immersive, but:
    1. It’s processed
    2. Can exaggerate crowd noise
    3. Sometimes feels “artificial” on playback

To avoid distortion:

  • Don’t stand right next to speakers (seriously—this ruins audio fast)
  • Keep some distance from screaming people (easier said than done, I know)
  • Avoid zooming in too much → it can change mic behavior
