MacOS 26.4 update broke custom icons on my Intel iMac

Confirming same issue. All custom disk and folder images gone except for the one drive where i used an icns file instead of a png as the custom picture.

2020 Intel 27" iMac.

So either follow the above procedure to change permissions on your volume or click the checkbox to ignore permissions on the volume.

Problem is only that for MacHD no permission for either admin group or me ....as user so user or group cannot be added ....even only in read only mode

It's the same overall issue with Apple updates. It's not like there were any Mac users out there begging Apple to fix the icon display issues in 26.3.1. Yet somehow, Apple felt a need to change something and created a new issue in 26.4. It wasn't broken.

After updating my system to Tahoe 26.4, all my custom folders were reverted to the plain, all-merging-into-one icons I sought to avoid. I am not being allowed to add new icons via info or any other means. I'm old and an adherent to the "old" maxim that says if it ain't broke, don't fix it. This is another in a long list of irritating instances of too much "enhancement" with no benefit. Please repair. Please?

I tried Mr. Richter's suggestion with high hopes, all the while thinking, "Am I really that stupid?" I'm not. Still no joy. I think I'll wait for Apple to make something, anything, known on this one. I'm getting a reall headache and I need some relief. Thanks for the effort, just the same.

The bulk of this topic revolves around the lost custom icons suffered by so many loyal Mac users when the new OS upgrade (26.4) was released. Are you just joking or was this a serious query. I'm confused. But, then, I'm old and usually confused.

I was refering that color taging folders are not cutom icons. Custom icons are when you paste an icon in the Get Info window to replace the default window. That's what this thead has been about. But then again I'm very old, I started with the Apple ][+ and then the Mac 128 (first Mac). I need to retire.

I am writing to report a persistent issue I’ve encountered after updating to macOS Tahoe 26.4.

The Problem:

Before the update, I had several folders with custom PNG images set as icons. Immediately after the 26.4 update, all these custom icons disappeared and reverted to the default blue folder icon.

What I’ve Tried:

1.I tried to re-apply the PNG images using the standard "Get Info" (Cmd+I) method.

2.I copied the image from Preview and tried to paste it onto the folder icon in the Info window, but it simply does not show up or revert back instantly.

3.I have tried restarting the Finder and the system, but the custom images are still not appearing.

Device Details:

OS: macOS Tahoe 26.4

Processor: 3.2 GHz 16-Core Intel Xeon W

Is this a known bug in version 26.4? If anyone has found a fix or a workaround to restore custom folder icons, please let me know.

Mine, too, and I'm a real happy camper! Kudos to the residents of Apple Techie Town for remembering the lowly users and providing a fairly rapid fix. Thanks for the kindness - a fast kindness at that. I take back all the nasty thoughts I've been having. Well, maybe not all, just those regarding the techs.

Same thing has happened to me and if causing issues visually to find my folders as my brain is looking for my icons

Just upgraded to 26.4 and my icons are broke as well. Can't even change them.

All mine are gone and it won't even let make new ones and my Lightroom no longer will open.

Mine have gone as well. Tried icons file no joy. Very annoying. have filed a bug report, but not expecting a resolution.
