Transfer Messages in iCloud to new iPhone

Had messaging working fine on iphone XS for years; all messages saved only to iphone. A new iphone on the way (iphone 17 pro max) and thought to include messages into iCloud sync. I routinely back up iphone to local PC.

So did this and see sizable amount of messages in iCloud. But noticed that message data amount of phone reduced during that sync. Then read and found out that many messages synced to iCloud dont remain on iphone. ****. Wish I could have understood that.

So now faced with how to get messages from iCloud to iphone. For that matter, lets just say to new iphone. I read and tried resetting the message 'sync' to OFF and understood that all the messages in iCloud would be transferred to the old iphone, but the disparity in data numbers between the two indicates no . . . that isn't true. Not all of the old messages have made their way back to the phone.

So with phone arriving later today, what's best to do?

Backup full to PC? iCloud? Both?? then restore backup to new iphone and 'hopefully' all the messages I had that are now in iCloud are transferred to new iphone? Or is there a method that 'will' transfer those iCloud messages to my old or new iphone?

Thanks in advance

You enable messages in iCloud on your new device for your messages to sync to the device.

If you restored from a backup, you’ll only be missing anything new since the backup was made. There is no need to sync if you restored from the backup that included your messages.

If you made a backup after enabling messages in iCloud, then only those items on device will backup.

after syncing, you can disable messages in iCloud and elect to have all messages downloaded to your device or you can choose to delete all messages.

This is f maddening . . .

iCloud has 3.92GB messages. iphone has 1.22GB.

Tried again setting up sync of messaging to iCloud, then deselecting and presented with 'Disable and Download messages'.

Nothing happens. No increase in the message data size on the iphone.

So I select to sync again.

Monitoring things, its wild and challenging what occurs: After choosing sync, I can watch the iphone message data size increase over a short period of time up to 4.95, then down to 3.92, then back down to 1.22.

So it does transfer those messages to the iphone during sync, but then does something that only leaves some on the iphone but retains all in iCloud. I have read a few explanations of this.

So what seems as a clear 'Disable and download . . . ' doesn't work.

Well, went through setting the phone up, restored a backup from older phone that was on PC, set up cellular on new phone . . . . and not once did I receive a prompt or see that Messages on iCloud were transferred to the new phone.

So lets back up: "If you log into messages in iCloud on your new device". Exactly what are you meaning by this? I went into iCloud, looked at Messages. By default they are off re: sync with iCloud. And they are all there judging by the size of the Message data. And I see no 'log in messages in iCloud'. I simply went through the menus to view the status within iCloud on my phone.

So if I'm missing something, please . . . . Thanks.

Well, part of what you describe is exactly what I did i.e. had Message to iCloud on new device ON, disabled it and up came a prompt "Disable and Download . . . . " and I waited until this a.m.

The size of the data associated with messages on my iphone is much less than that in iCloud and the size hasn't changed since before disabling the iCloud sync.

I'm tapped. Searched for answers on web late last night and came across others in the same boat, with instructions on how to make this happen not working. I've never tried calling Apple ever . . . is that even a possibility any longer to seek assistance, or does one have to be on some kind of paid 'Help' plan?

Thanks again for the input, but something just isn't right. Perhaps with the newest iOS and this particular iphone 17 pro max?
