M3 MacBook Pro not waking with Touch ID or trackpad tap

After my Mac sleeps for about 10 seconds, I can’t unlock it by simply placing my finger on the power button—I have to physically press it. The same happens with the trackpad; I need to click it to wake the Mac.

Isn’t it supposed to wake up just by placing my finger on the power button?

I’m using an M3 MacBook Pro running macOS Sonoma 14.5.

I have found it varies between different model laptops. It also likely depends whether the laptop has been asleep for a long time. I notice needing to press the power button (aka TouchID) on my M1 laptop that has a Touchbar and not on my later M2 laptop. I believe once in a while I need to press the button on my M2, but I think that is when the M2 has been asleep a while. I never paid that much attention to it.
