Anyone else experiencing crashes/pairing issues on Apple Watch Series 3 after updating to watchOS 8.8.2?

Hello All,

I recently updated my Apple Watch Series 3 (MTF12J/A) to the security-focused watchOS 8.8.2 (19U526) released a few days ago. Since then, I’ve been facing the following issues and am looking for any similar cases or workarounds.

[Symptoms]

  • a) Sudden Shutdowns: Even with a full charge, the screen goes black within less than an hour of use. Upon restarting, the Apple logo appears, and the battery still shows over 80%.
  • b) Unstable Pairing: After unpairing, attempts to "Set Up as New Apple Watch" repeatedly fail.
  • c) Syncing Errors: I managed to pair it by "Restoring from Backup," but multiple apps are stuck with installation errors. Furthermore, the sudden shutdowns (issue A) still persist.

[Troubleshooting Done (No success)]

  • Restarted both devices (Power Off/On).
  • Unpaired and re-paired (tried both "New Device" and "Restore from Backup").
  • Uninstalled McAfee Security app to rule out interference.
  • Ran Apple Support remote diagnostics (Result: "No issues found").

[Feedback from Apple Support]

I consulted with an Apple Senior Support Specialist, but they mentioned there are currently no similar reports. Downgrading the OS is not an option, and they suggested a paid hardware inspection at an authorized service center. However, since the battery lasted a full day immediately before the update, I strongly suspect this is a software-related issue rather than hardware failure.

[Environment]

  • iPhone: iPhone 16e (iOS 26.4)
  • Apple Watch: Series 3 (watchOS 8.8.2 / 19U526)

If anyone else is experiencing similar symptoms after this update, or even if yours is working perfectly fine, please let me know. Any information or potential workarounds would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I’ve been experiencing the exact same issues since updating my Apple Watch Series 3 to the recently released watchOS 8.8.2, paired with an iPhone 16e running the latest iOS.

I managed to stop the sudden restarts by unpairing the watch and setting it up again as a new device. However, like you, I’m still stuck with several native Apple apps failing to install.

Since so many of us are facing this, I’m convinced it’s a bug in watchOS 8.8.2. I’ve already reported this via Apple’s Product Feedback, but I haven't heard back yet.

Let’s hope Apple releases a fix or an update soon!

Earlier today, several international news sites also reported on the issue in watchOS 8.8.2 where Apple Watch apps fail to install.

In my case as well, my iPhone 16e was forced to update to iOS 26.4.1 last night. After the update, I unpaired my Apple Watch, set it up again as a completely new device, and re-synced all the apps — but nothing changed. Most of the default apps still refuse to install.

If anyone else is experiencing the same issue or has seen any improvement, I’d really appreciate hearing your results.

iOS 26.4.1 has been released, and my iPhone 16e was actually forced to update last night. After the update, I unpaired my Apple Watch, set it up as a completely new device, and synced everything again — but nothing changed. Most of the default apps still refuse to install on watchOS 8.8.2 😕

I’d really appreciate hearing your results 🙏✨

Yesterday, my Apple Watch finally installed all the default apps and was working normally. However, this morning the issue came back.

Even with more than 90% battery remaining, it suddenly goes into “Power Reserve” mode and then shuts down.

It had been stable and working fine all day the day before yesterday, so I’m a bit concerned that the problem has returned.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?
