Studio Display XDR low resolution on Windows

I am writing to report a significant issue and express my concern regarding the performance of my recently purchased Apple Studio Display XDR (March 2026 model).

I was genuinely excited about this product given Apple’s reputation for premium display technology. However, I was very surprised and disappointed to find that the display does not function as expected when connected to my Windows laptops.

Devices used:

  • Dell Pro Premium PA13250 - Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort 1.4
  • HP Spectre x360 Convertible 13-aw2xxx (personal laptop) - Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort 1.4

Both devices are running Windows with the latest available video drivers and DisplayPort 1.4 (DisplayPort 1.4 handles up to 8K at 60Hz with DSC)

Issue description:

When connecting the Studio Display XDR:

  • The display operates only at downgraded resolutions (e.g., 1080p, upscaled). It does not deliver the expected native high-resolution experience
  • The connection appears to rely on DisplayPort behavior rather than fully utilizing Thunderbolt/DisplayPort 1.4 capabilities or even DisplayPort Alt Mode is supporting 4K for an example.

This is particularly concerning given that the display features Thunderbolt 5 or DisplayPort connectivity and is marketed as a high-end professional monitor. According to available technical information, achieving full resolution typically requires proper Thunderbolt or USB4 bandwidth support (Laptop Outlet, UK).

Based on public documentation:

The Studio Display is primarily optimized for Apple ecosystem devices and officially lists compatibility mainly with Mac and certain iPad models (Apple Support), but it's using technology Thunderbolt 5 (DisplayPort) that even on non-Apple ecosystem is supposed to work on every device that is compatible (generic) with this technology. This is a technology limitation as per my opinion.

Additional context:

Before purchasing the Studio Display XDR, I tested an Apple Studio Display Nano (MFF14Z) - Year introduced: 2022, which behaved more predictably under similar conditions, fully 5K supported.

I would appreciate your assistance with:

  • Clarification on expected behavior when using Studio Display XDR with Windows devices
  • Recommended configuration or hardware requirements to achieve full resolution
  • Possible solutions or workarounds (adapters, docks, firmware update, etc.)
  • Guidance on whether this is a limitation of the display design or a compatibility issue

Thanks in advance!

I have a newly purchase Apple Studio Display XDR. I have a MacBook Pro (M2 Max Chip).  I also have a Dell Precision 5690 Laptop issued by my work firm.

When I connect my MacBook Pro to the XDR Display (and all other peripherals; Cameras, Stream Deck, UA Apollo, Elgato Prompter, others) I have no issues with any device at any resolution or any part of my setup. No Issues.

When I connect my Dell Prec5690 to the XDR Display, it does not work at 4k resolutions. I continually get the "handshake/disconnect" tone, but no video on the display.

One time (only one time) did I get the XDR Display to connect to the laptop and show video at a 1920x1080 resolution. (I'm not sure what I did to make that happen). After I disconnected to swap back to my MacBook Pro, I was never able to connect my Dell laptop to the XDR Display.

I did the software update on the XDR Display, and tried the same connections/setting again, and I still cannot connect my XDR Display to my work-provided Dell laptop.

I don't need the XDR to do anything fancy for work. But I do need it to turn on and display something. At $3200, that should be a simple performance baseline...

Been an Apple Guy since the IIe.....so far this has not been a win.

why would you commingle work and home device and not have same os? backwards compatibility.

your not going to get any of the same if any at all working quality if using a non apple device. Bottom line apple wants customers to use apple. using windows based devices on apple platforms or tech not only poses a security risk to apples systems which become harder to identify and mitigate because of the programming differences but you just won't have the same features accessible to you.

Whether you use emulators or not its never a good idea

Comingle devices? I have a MacBook Pro (personal) and a Dell (for work). My Mac and my work Dell both work on my additional 24” HP displays (2x). It’s a 3 display set up. (Not using the either laptop display as a display)

can’t help the work computer, but I did have it working for a while. Once I switched, it hasn’t worked since.
