iPad Pro M5 numeric keypad UI bug after iPadOS 26.4

Subject: Numeric keypad UI bug on iPad Pro M5 after iPadOS 26.4 update

Description:

Since updating to iPadOS 26.4 on my iPad Pro M5, I have encountered a significant UI bug regarding the on-screen keyboard.

The Issue:

The virtual numeric keypad fails to appear in specific security-related fields. Specifically, when navigating to Settings > Face ID & Passcode, the iPad does not show the numeric keyboard to enter the passcode. The top edge of the keyboard is barely visible at the very bottom of the screen, but it cannot be pulled up or interacted with.

This issue also persists in third-party apps (like Messenger) whenever a numeric-only PIN is required.

Workaround found:

Standard alphanumeric keyboards work perfectly across the OS. If I change the system passcode to a "Custom Alphanumeric Code" using a Bluetooth keyboard, the full QWERTY keyboard appears correctly even in the Face ID & Passcode menu, allowing me to enter the code.

Troubleshooting steps already taken:

Forced restart (did not fix it).

Cleaning the Smart Connector (did not fix it).

Resetting the keyboard dictionary (did not fix it).

It seems the "Numeric Pad" layout is incorrectly rendered/positioned in this OS version. Is anyone else experiencing this on the M5 models?

Second update: Solved the bug via Settings>General>Keyboard>Keyboards:

  1. Moving from QWERTY-ISO to QWERTY-British.
  2. Face ID & Passcode: numeric keypad UI worked
  3. Changed from numeric passcode to alphanumeric passcode
  4. Moved back to QWERTY-ISO keyboards.

Or as Copilot wrote...

✅ WORKAROUND (confirmed fix)

You can force iPadOS to reload a different secure keypad configuration by temporarily switching keyboard layouts.

Steps:

  1. Go to:

Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards

  1. Change your layout from:

QWERTY‑ISO → QWERTY‑British

(or any non‑ISO English layout)

  1. Now go to:

Settings → Face ID & Passcode

  1. The numeric keypad will now load correctly

(the broken ISO keypad is bypassed)

  1. Enter your current passcode
  2. Tap Change Passcode
  3. Choose:

Passcode Options → Custom Alphanumeric Code

  1. Set a new alphanumeric passcode

(this uses the normal keyboard subsystem, which is not affected by the bug)

  1. Return to:

Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards

  1. Switch back to QWERTY‑ISO if you prefer

(safe now — alphanumeric passcodes never use the numeric keypad)

You may have tried some of this already...

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated or post-update software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

Several different workarounds have already been presented here, but I want to contribute what I've figured out on my 9th generation iPad and what works on it.

When I go into Settings > "Touch ID & Passcode," the keyboard doesn't appear. Simply turning the screen off and on doesn't bring it up. I have to close the "Enter your passcode" window, then turn the screen off/on, and then the keyboard appears. If I go to other sections in Settings and then back to "Touch ID...," the keyboard appears, even if I minimize Settings and then bring it up again. However, if I close Settings completely and then reopen it — no keyboard.

Removing and adding keyboards made no difference on my iPad. I don't know what QWERTY-ISO is either, as it doesn't say. There are different keyboards like QWERTZ and AZERTY, etc., but nothing with ISO in the name.

Turning the screen off/on outside of "Touch ID..." works for me. However, Sooonie's suggestion to pinch and drag the keyboard is easier of course. Let's hope Apple will have a fix for this in the next update.

Update: external bluetooth: no input.

My guess is (hopefully I am wrong)

Looks like GUI = 0 for this numeric keypad UI for all keyboards, software, hardware and bluetooth! Update and DFU - update may well re-install the same bug.

Looks like the iPadOS 26.4.2 or later has to address this bug via updating while using Mac and usb-c.

Unfortunately not fixed in iOS 26.4.1. The keyboard is still not showing on iPad for a numeric PIN here shown in the Settings app. This also applies to many third party apps where the number pad keyboard is not rendered on screen.

Furthermore if you want to update from iOS 26.4 to iOS 26.4.1 you have to enter your PIN which is not possible if it is numeric (keyboard will not show). I had to change my PIN to letters (the .default keyboard will show instead of the .numberPad) in order to get the update. I guess that most users will not figure that out and thus will never get a future fix unless it is coming in a forced update.

During updating to iPadOS 26.4.1 using Mac and usb-c, when requested on the iPad, the num-keypad UI showed and operated as expected.

After updating using Mac, this numeric keypad UI bug persisted. No keypad UI showing when navigating to Settings>Face ID & Passcode.

This keypad UI bug affects also Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro: no input from this numeric keyboard possible.
