There is no such thing as an iPhone sx or an iPhone r. Were you, perhaps, referring to the iPhone XS and iPhone XR?

If so, the only way to "upgrade" would be to purchase a used iPhone XS or XR. I would not recommend this, as these models are long-discontinued, and forever limited to iOS 18. iOS 26 is already out, and if Apple continues following past release schedules, iOS 27 will be coming out some time this fall.

There are also a number of potential pitfalls associated with buying used iPhones:

Judging by MacTracker, iPhones typically get between four and six major iOS updates before they hit "the end of the line", with five being common.

If you are looking for a phone that will receive updates for some time to come, your best bet would probably be an iPhone 17-series phone or iPhone Air, which has all of its major updates ahead of it. Apple also sells new copies of the base model iPhone 16, and, in some countries, Certified Refurbished 15-series and 16-series phones.

Buy a better phone. Apple do not sell the SX or R anymore, so I would suggest if you really want one, look second-hand. However the iPhone SX is ancient (so is the R) so I would suggest if you want a new phone, look for an SE 3rd gen, or a 14

There is no iPhone model SX or R. And suggesting the Author purchase a new iPhone SE 3rd Generation or iPhon 14 isn't great advice. Both phones are discontinued.
