There is no reason to deal with any of the Library files to change the drive icon. And because the current macOS files are protected, you cannot change them by means of the Finder.

What I and others here are doing is simply copying and then pasting a new icon image into the "image well" found in the Get Info panel opened for the drive. (See the 2nd image in my previous post.)

• Use Preview to open the icon or image you want to assign to the drive.

• Select all or just a section of the image and Copy (⌘C) that to the clipboard.

• Then select the existing drive on the desktop and click File > Get Info (⌘I). In the Get Info panel, click the drive icon at the upper left corner and Paste (⌘V). The drive icon will (should) become the image you chose in Preview.

I have no problem pasting an image into the icon well.

How do I do it? Open an image in Preview, Copy, and paste that into the icon well in Get Info.

I've had no problem today changing both internal and external drive icons using the copy & paste method in Tahoe 26.4.

Our friend, @leroydouglas, is correct concerning the internal drive of your Mac.

If you are asking about changing the icon for an external drive, that can still be done using the copy and paste method in the Get Info panel of the drive.

Find an icon you like from another drive or one you may have downloaded, select it and copy it.

Then click the drive icon of the ext device you want to change, press command-i to open the Get Info panel, select the drive icon in the top left corner and then paste (⌘V) your previously copied icon to that.

If you have downloaded an icon to use, you can open that icon in Preview app, select and coopy it from there and then paste it into place in your ext drive Get Info panel.
