iPhone 16 Pro Max Do Not Disturb turns on automatically

Recently, my iPhone 16 Pro Max constantly defaults to Do not Disturb and it's driving me a little nuts. I am on the latest version of IOS, I have deleted all of my Focus Schedules, I have turned off "Share Across Devices", and I have re-booted the phone and also performed a hard reset once or twice. However everyday, when I toggle it off by swiping down from the top right, it'll stay off for a little while but will turn back on again. There are only two things I have changed in the last few months (1) I got an Apple Watch for the first time, and (2) I started using Verizon Call Filter, which I disabled right around the time this issue began happening. I'd like to resolve it, because if I forget to toggle it off when it's not supposed to be on, I will miss things.

Well, well, well. After trying almost every troubleshooting step under the sun, and trying ALL troubleshooting steps I could find anywhere (including this thread), Do Not Disturb continued to come on randomly without a schedule or me pushing buttons, and so I finally called Apple for support. First level support couldn't fix it, but tried everything (it happened twice while I was chatting with them), so they bumped me to second level support, where two bugs were explained to me, not super clearly, but clear enough to know I am not crazy. One of the two bugs was fixed with the 26.4.1 release, which came out two days after the last post to this thread, and the other had to do with Apple Intelligence, which he explained he was able to reset at the server level to unlearn its behavior. Basically AI was going awry and turning it on when it predicted I would want it. Thought you might want to know! Thank you for trying to help!

Don Not Disturb never turns on automatically, unless you set it up to do so.

Focus and Do Not Disturb setup has been made much more flexible to meet user demands for additional features, but this has come at the cost of much more complication. To get it working again, do these steps ONCE:

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Focus
  • Tap on any Focus settings that you will never use and remove them (you can add them back later if you change your mind, and even create new, custom ones)
  • Tap Do Not Disturb
  • Turn off Intelligent Breakthrough & Silencing (unless you want it after reading the description)
  • Tap People
  • Tap Allow Notifications From
  • If anyone is listed who should not call you when DND is on delete them; if you don’t want any calls from anyone, any time, delete all people
  • Tap the dropdown next to Allow Calls From and choose Allowed People Only
  • Optionally, tap on Apps, then Allow Notifications From and don’t add any apps.
  • Turn off Repeat Calls

All of the above is a one-time setup. After that, turn DND on or off with a quick tap on the Control Center DND button. You can optionally set one or more schedules by going to:

Settings/Focus/Do Not Disturb/Set a Schedule.

There are many other features, but these instructions put it back to the way it worked in simpler days. Over the years Apple has had a steady stream of requests for DND enhancements, and they seem to have incorporated all of them.

Thank you for your response. I have done all that before (and more, like deleting all schedules), and I did these steps again after your response, exactly as you described. Nevertheless, my phone put itself on Do Not Disturb again this afternoon without a schedule to do so, nor did I enable it manually. I should note, I have had every iPhone since 2007, and have never had this problem until recently. I suspected the Verizon Call Filter I disabled might use the function to silence unwanted calls, but after further research, it does it at the network level, so that's not the issue. The only other thing that has changed is that I recently paired an Apple Watch for the first time, and I wonder if it's doing some odd and unwanted synching. I'm going to power down the watch for a day or two to eliminate or confirm it as a contributor.

What is a “hard reset”?

You erased and restored it as new?

I had a similar issue on

On my Mac, do not disturb was always turning on and wad set to shut off on May 21 at 8 AM.

I had no schedule set. I had turned off sync across devices and everything, but it kept popping back up.

It just went away one day and I have no idea why it was there or why it went away
