Note that the 2x optical zoom option (for all models), and the 8x optical zoom option (for the 17 Pro and Pro Max) would have a maximum resolution of 12 MP. By cropping off everything outside the center of the image on one of its 48 MP sensors, the iPhone would be able to produce a 12 MP image at 2x the "equivalent" focal length. That's how all of the 17-series models are able to offer more "optical zoom options" than they have physical cameras.
