Studio Display XDR Fails Full Calibration

Studio Display XDR Fails Full Calibration

I have two Studio Display XDRs connected to a Mac Studio M3 Ultra. When trying to use a Display Plus HL to calibrate the displays, I'm only able to calibrate one of them. My setup is a Thunderbolt 5 cable going direct into the first display and then a Thunderbolt 5 cable daisy-chained to the second display. The first display was able to calibrate just fine under a full calibration; however, when I tried to do the second display, it failed.

I tried multiple times with multiple different dual-monitor settings within the display settings application, but nothing helped.

I then disconnected the daisy chain and directly plugged the second display in via the Thunderbolt 5 cable, and it is still failing. It seems to go through the full calibration and get to the end but then just throw up an error message saying that it failed to calibrate. I must have tried a dozen times already with multiple configurations.

Any ideas? I do have the latest firmware that was pushed out recently as well as the latest Mac OS release.

Update on the original post.

After three calls back and forth with Apple Support who transferred me to (pretty sure) every single department they had. The conclusion they came up with was I have to take it into an Apple Store. They would not send me a replacement over the phone.

Took it to my local apple store and started over. The guy was very nice but I spent 2.5 hours there. He hooked it up...ran some tests...then said he had to reinstall to firmware. That proceeded to brick the monitor and he was unable to get it back. They then told me they had to install a new logic board and I'd be without it for 1-2 weeks. With a little kindness, they were nice enough just to return the monitor and let me order a new one.

The new monitor has arrived and it calibrates just fine.

Hi everyone, here's my update:

Apple replaced both of my displays, and B&H replaced my Calibrite Display Plus HL.

I updated my Mac to 26.4.1 yesterday. I am now running each display on its own TB5 cable to an M4 Max Mac Studio (no daisy chaining).

I updated the replacement displays' firmware one at a time, with the other display unplugged, and shutdown/reboots in between reconnecting the displays. I then did this same process for the "full calibration" process on each display (only one display connected when attempting to calibrate).

I have been able to successfully calibrate both displays, and they are reasonable accurate. I do think one may still have a mild warm/magenta tint to it, but barely perceptible.

Overall, a lot of variables changed so I am not sure what exactly led to being able to successfully calibrate both displays on the first try this time. Maybe a fix was hidden in Tahoe 26.4.1? Maybe my original displays were faulty?

In any case, this was a disappointing 4 week process to go through for having $10k+ of brand new apple hardware on the desk. I do hope these displays continue to receive firmware updates to dial in their stability. Until I hear more, I'm not messing around with my setup that has finally reached a happy (enough) place.

I've been having the exact same issue. Two Studio Display XDRs, Calibrite HL Plus, same error messages. Displays also did not match from the factory - one had a magenta tint to it on every preset. Please get in touch with apple support and let them know. It took me some time and they collected images, system logs, etc. They are replacing both of my displays.

I am disheartened to see you having the same issue, as it means my replacement displays will likely not fix the problem.

solutions are described above.

<< ... as it means my replacement displays will likely not fix the problem. >>

Your said Apple is replacing your two expensive displays because, after thorough analysis, they are not good enough.

That means Apple is standing by their product.

... and in the unlikely even that either of the replacement displays is also not adequate, that display will be replaced (within 14 days of receipt) as well.

You are reading of ONE failure here on a support forum, which is Lightning Rod for users with problems. You are ignoring the Thousands of unit owners who never posted here, because their product worked great.

Your pessimism is not warranted.

The pool of people that own two of these displays is likely pretty small, so few people are actively comparing two panels to each other side by side. Of that numbver of people, fewer still are likely attempting to calibrate them with the Calibrite HL Plus. Forgive me for expecting this issue to go under-reported.

I expect this is a software issue that will persist until it is patched.

Same issue with me as well. I have an active support ticket I’m working through now with engineers, and have sent diagnostic logs. The only hardware thing i could imagine is that the thermal sensor could be malfunctioning.

Did replacement monitors work for some anyone?
