Tracking shade to a moving face in Final Cut Pro

I have a clip of 1930s footage that I've sharpened using Topaz Video. The faces in a crowd now look very clear. But the face of one person who was sitting at an angle is very distorted and unreal. Some shade is being thrown on part of her and I'd like to find a way in Final Cut 12 to add shade to her face and have that shade travel with her image as the camera moves left and right. Any suggestions on the steps to attach that shade to her face?

With thanks and best regards always,

Duncan

Here is the general idea. I can't say how well it works in your specific case, of course.

You may apply an effect with a mask, or you can make a duplicate and work on

Option 1

Drag the desired effect (Color Wheels, for example) directly onto the area of the clip that you want to affect.

A mask is automatically associated to the effect itself.

Option 2

Hold down the Option key and drag the clip up to make a copy.

Drag the Magnetic Mask effect onto the area in question of the top clip.

Then apply the relevant effects to the top clip.

Hi Luis, thanks so much for replying. I'd love to share a snippet, but the clip belongs to someone else who I won't be able to reach in time for permission.

A big problem I've had with trying to fix this with Magnetic Mask is that when I open MM and put it on the clip, I don't get the visual structure that I would put over the woman's face.

And if I could, what steps would I need to take to use a Color Chart or Wheels on it to gray it out?

Thanks again, Luis.

Hi Luis,

Thank you for your helpful suggestions. I was able to try using Magnetic Mask on the clip and it was better. But I finally decided to just use the original clip without the Topaz sharpening, as the people in it looked more real that way. So the woman I was trying to cover in shade didn't need covering.

Still, I am very grateful to you for responding. Part and parcel of being in a state of high anxiety about needing to do something but not knowing how is how encouraging and welcome it is to have someone like you reach out with an offer to help. I am so appreciative of you and the others who respond to those of us at a loss of what to do and crying out for help. Luis, thank you. Duncan
