Mac Studio M1 Ultra multi-display sync for large canvas

I am using a Mac Studio with M1 Ultra and want to understand its capabilities regarding multi-display output and synchronization.


My use case involves creating a very wide display canvas (around 16000 × 1176 pixels) using multiple external displays or processors connected via HDMI and Thunderbolt/DisplayPort. Each output drives a portion of the overall canvas.


I understand that Mac Studio supports 4K over HDMI and up to 6K over Thunderbolt/DisplayPort. However, my main concern is synchronization between multiple outputs.


Does Mac Studio support frame-accurate synchronization across multiple displays? When using HDMI and Thunderbolt outputs together, are all displays perfectly in sync, or can there be timing differences?


Also, is there any support for genlock or external synchronization to ensure all outputs remain frame-locked? What is the recommended way to avoid visible tearing or alignment issues when using multiple outputs for a large canvas?

Readers report that Mac Extended Desktop is seamless, and once set up, it becomes invisible.


For example, supporting left and right halves of a single wide display on different interfaces is well supported.


Try it, you'll like it!

FWIW I see no tearing or line between two matching displays in extended desktop mode.


Here is a screenshots of my everyday desktop. Main display on the left, Expanded Desktop on the right.

As you can see, the only noticeable break is the end of the menu bar on the main display.



The next screenshot is of the Safari window spanning across the main and extended displays.

As you can see, the only noticeable break is the end of the menu bar on the main display and not the Safari window.



The next screenshot is of Sharks 3D running in the background.

As you can see, again the only noticeable break is the end of the menu bar on the main display.



The next screenshot is of Sharks 3D in full screen mode.

As you can see, there is no noticeable break down the middle between the main and extended display.



All bets are off if you have two different size displays, because then you will struggle with the arrangement and alignment issues.

The Mac can operate in a mode called Extended Desktop. This feature has been available in all Macs with multi-display support since about 1987.


displays are concatenated along an edge of your choosing. The mouse moves freely across the boundary between displays, and can drag or stretch a window across multiple displays. a window parked on the boundary updates and scrolls "the right way".


This is the extended desktop "arrange" pane from an older version of MacOS:




Note that Macs more recent than M1 have slightly higher individual display capabilities than M1 Macs, such as HDMI support for one display at 8K at 60 Hz. M5 Macs seem to be able to slightly higher on their Thunderbolt/DisplayPort outputs as well.

Thank you for your response, but my question is specifically about synchronization, not extended desktop functionality.




I understand how extended desktop works. My concern is whether multiple outputs (HDMI and Thunderbolt/DisplayPort) on Mac Studio are frame-synchronized.




If I split a single ultra-wide canvas across multiple outputs for use with LED processors, will all outputs be frame-accurate and perfectly in sync, or can there be timing differences between them?




I am trying to avoid visible tearing or lines between displays, so I would like to know if macOS provides any way to ensure frame-locked outputs.

Hey, thanks for sharing the screenshots — that helps.




However, my use case is quite different from standard extended desktop usage. I’m working with a large LED canvas split across multiple LED processors, where each output from the Mac Studio feeds a separate processor.




My concern isn’t about visual continuity in desktop apps, but about frame-level sync between outputs. Even if the desktop appears seamless, without proper hardware sync, there can still be slight timing differences between outputs.




This issue becomes especially noticeable with fast-moving video content on LED walls — where a visible line or tearing appears between processor sections. Interestingly, this doesn’t happen when using NVIDIA GPUs with proper sync support.




As far as I understand, genlock devices exist specifically to synchronize outputs at the hardware level, which is critical in these scenarios.




It would be really helpful if you could try playing some high-motion / fast video content across both displays and check if there’s any sync mismatch, then confirm.




Also, do you know if the Mac Studio (M1 Ultra) provides any form of hardware-level sync across multiple outputs, or is it purely software-timed?
