iPhone captions not transferring to Mac mini (USB/AirDrop

Captions do not transfer from iPhone to Mac mini.

I just came back from a trip where I took lots of photos on my iPhone SE3 running iOS 18.7.2. I spent a lot of time entering info in the Captions field and would *really* like to not lose all that info. I tried transferring to my Mac mini M4 Pro running macOS 15.7.4 over USB with Image Capture, but could not find the caption info anywhere. There was not a Description field in the file info or within Image Capture.

So then I tried transferring over AirDrop, with the same result: no Description field anywhere to be found in the File Info or in Preview. This is a problem I have seen discussed on these forums for years, yet it still seems unresolved.

I do not use iCloud or the Photos app because both present problems I prefer to avoid. I have learned from long experience (I have used Macs since 1985) not to upgrade any OS until at least three newer versions have been released, and this is not, in itself, a sufficiently compelling issue to justify an OS upgrade.

Is there any solution someone can suggest? If I have to go through hundreds of photos and manually re-enter the caption data I will be even grumpier than I am right now.

The whole experience is actually quite galling. The entire premise of the Apple system approach is that, within the Apple ecosystem, the user experience is supposed to be smooth and well-integrated, but the idea that something as simple as transferring all photo metadata doesn't work, more than 40 years after the Mac's original release, does not speak well for the health of Steve Jobs' philosophy at the company.

thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

Actually, I just now found the darned caption in Preview, so it did transfer, but it is thoroughly buried. You have to go to Info (technically "More Info"), then the TIFF tab, which makes little sense to me as a place to put a caption. But, lo and behold, there is an Image Description field that has the caption in it. In my view, it should be part of the basic photo info presented as soon as you open an Info window, not buried two levels down, but I guess the gurus at Apple know far better than me what is convenient for me.

I don't like Photos because it consolidates all photos into a single file, rather than storing them as separate files. Yes, you can export any individual photo, but that involves a couple extra steps every time you want to do it. As one who has done a fair amount of asset management work, I have always found problems with systems that aggregate assets into a single file.

Anyway, it looks my problem is solved... until they decide to move that field somewhere else, at least.

Thanks for the help!

Display of Captions on the Mac depends on which iOS/iPadOS is used...

iOS 16 inserts Caption to XMP-dc:Description AND IFD0:ImageDescription while iPadOS 26 inserts ONLY to the latter which neither Finder's GetInfo nor Photos.app display.

Weirdly IFD0:ImageDescription is displayed if there is ANY XMP tag present and iPadOS 26 doesn't add any XMP. So in the example below Finder > Get Info and Photos.app then display qwerty. ...I have for a long time wondered why Apple did this change and favors that legacy IFD0:ImageDescription instead XMP...

exiftool -a -G1 -s image.heic
[IFD0]          ImageDescription                : qwerty
[XMP-dc]        Description                     : asdfgh

Also, if you import via USB, then only originals are imported with no added metadata. AirDrop has a similar option which I sometimes tell my family use if I want them to send me the original instead the edited version.

GraphicConveter does display Caption if there is only IFD0:ImageDescription, and AFAIR when editing IPTC/XMP it by default copies IFD0:ImageDescription to IPTC/XMP and then deletes legacy IFD0:ImageDescription so it does not cause further problems.

p.s. Photos library is not a single file but a folder disguised as a package. It is possible to dive in that package but then you must be careful not to make any changes that might corrupt it (that's why the contents are hidden inside the package so mere mortals don't mess with its contents...).

Recommend this Feature to Apple:

Do your Part: Inform Apple of this idea. You'd do so by providing Apple Feedback on this.  Apple wont get back to you directly, but the more feedback thy receive from its users, the more likely they will know what their customers prefer, and what options to include in macOS versions to come. Apple will know nothing of your ideas, if you don't provide them to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - macOS - Apple
  2. Select: "Feature Request" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Select: "User Interface" for the "Feedback Area"
  4. Comment: that want this to be an option, and how you think it can help others.
  5. Proceed from there as necessary

I still think Apple could and should make the whole thing much simpler and smoother. It's just metadata!

Yes ... but often metadata is a mess with similar but out-of-sync EXIF/IPTC/XMP/QuickTime/Keys/UserData/ItemList/etc metadata which different apps read differently and often in the order they happen to be in a file. Sometimes completely unrelated metadata like non-current legacy IPTCDigest will unexpectedly break the rules the user would expect. And social sites like Facebook, WhatsApp etc remove metadata so apps revert to often incorrect fragile file dates instead. Movie metadata is still a more nonstandard mess. Local time vs UTC time vs GPS time vs GPS location and time zones are another flies in the ointment. So often it is very hard to answer without sample files when a user asks "why my images sort incorrectly" and just what date tags they happen to look (file dates vs metadata dates and what metadata dates).

Try Importing the Images from your iPhone directly into the Photos App on your Mac.

On the USB cable, you can use Image Capture to Import the Images into Photos or optionally open Photos on your Mac and select Import from the iPhone to Photos on the Mac.

FWIW I'm also a non-cloud user and I have it setup so that the Photos app on the Mac automatically opens when the iPhone is connected to the Mac via a USB cable.

“I don't like Photos because it consolidates all photos into a single file, rather than storing them as separate files.”

they ARE stored as separate files in a folder (called a package)

“Yes, you can export any individual photo, but that involves a couple extra steps every time you want to do it”

must drag them from the photos window to wherever you want.
