This is caused by iPadOS's "iPhone Layout" feature which was introduced in iPadOS 26. When enabled, it makes the iPad home screen match your iPhone's layout. Here's how to turn it off:
1. Disable iPhone Layout mode:
- Go to Settings > Home Screen & App Library
- Look for "Use iPhone Layout" or "Mirror iPhone Home Screen"
- Toggle it OFF
- This should restore the iPad's native home screen layout
2. If the setting isn't visible or the problem persists after toggling:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout
- This resets to the default iPad home screen layout
- Your apps won't be deleted, but their positions will be rearranged
3. Why this might have happened automatically:
- In iPadOS 26, if you set up the iPad fresh or restored from a backup, the iPhone Layout setting may have been imported from your iPhone's backup
- Apple introduced this as a convenience feature for users who prefer a consistent experience across devices, but it defaults ON for some users unexpectedly
4. Prevent it from happening again:
- After disabling, go back to Settings > Home Screen & App Library and verify "Use iPhone Layout" remains OFF after a restart
- If it re-enables itself after restart, check if Screen Time restrictions are forcing it (Settings > Screen Time)
Once disabled, you should be able to freely arrange apps in the iPad-native grid layout again.
