WhatsApp defaulting in calls instead of FaceTime

Calls Are defaulting to WhatsApp despite me deactivating this option and it’s really frustrating. I used to be able to FaceTime my parents easily and since updating my phone to iOS 26 when I click the call button it automatically calls them via WhatsApp! I’ve researched online and no one seems to have found a solution. When I press and hold the call button the FaceTime option doesn’t always show either which is weird. I’ve gone to setting - apps - default apps - calling - and confirmed WhatsApp what’s not selected on here, however the issue keeps happening. Is there an actual fix to this? I don’t want to use WhatsApp I want to use FaceTime.

This sounds like a flavor of the issue that I've been trying to track down and it's now looking like may have been introduced in a very recent OS update, where a contact does not show available for FaceTime calls in the Contacts app or tapping their card in FaceTime recents, even though they are in fact contactable. In my case there is no alternate contact method so the button is just greyed out, but I am assuming if I had WhatsApp set up for video calling it would do the same thing as with the phone icon--default to that if it's incorrectly showing them as not-FaceTime-able.

This isn't a fix, but may be a workaround: If you have messaged the person in the Messages app, the camera icon that appears in the top right seems to work normally even when other things don't, so if you initiate a call that way (tap and hold on the icon to select the specific method), it may allow calls instead of defaulting to WhatsApp.

The other thing you can do is, in the FaceTime app, select "new call" and find their contact card--that seems to initiate calls normally.

For my devices, if I've video called the person recently so they show up in the FaceTime app's recent calls section, tapping the quick-call camera icon on their card will also work, although in your case that might still route to WhatsApp.

Thanks Marc,

from reading on Reddit this does seem to be an iOS 26 new thing.. Your workarounds all sound great, I’ve used most of them - another one was that I’ve put the FaceTime app where the Phone app used to be, it’s a very automatic move for me to open the Phone app and go to the favorites tab so now when I go to do that I’m actually opening the FaceTime app. Interestingly now that I mentioned it, even the favorites on the Phone app if they were saved as FaceTime they still redirect to WhatsApp…

Either way, thank you for your opinion and tips I’ll use them and share with my friends and family that are also struggling.
