iPhone can't find my new AirTag, but my Mac can

Just bought a new AirTag and I set it up by connecting it to my iPhone 12 with the latest iOS 26.4.1.

But after connecting, the iPhone can't find the AirTag's location even though the AirTag is right next to me.

When I click on the AirTag in the Find My app, a message says it can't find its location and when I try to play a sound, I get this error message: AirTag not reachable, move around to connect.

However, my MacBook can find its location and make it play a sound.

Obviously there is something wrong with the iPhone and not the AirTag. Maybe an iOS bug?

I have factory reset the AirTag multiple times, restarted the iPhone multiple times, reset network settings, reset location and privacy, turned bluetooth and wifi on and off etc. I also tried removing the battery and waiting until the next day before putting it back in.

My iPhone still can't find the AirTag's location. Feel like I've tried everything.

Any help is highly appreciated!

You’re right to suspect the issue is on the iPhone side—your Mac being able to find and play a sound on the AirTag proves the AirTag itself and your Apple Account setup are fine. This kind of mismatch usually points to a Bluetooth / Ultra Wideband / Find My permission issue on the iPhone, or a subtle iOS glitch.

Let's try a quick test ...

  • Turn Bluetooth OFF on your Mac
  • Stand next to the AirTag
  • Try connecting from your iPhone again

If it suddenly works: Your iPhone’s Bluetooth is weak or misbehaving.

If it still doesn’t: It’s almost certainly a software/config issue on the iPhone

With that said, here are some things you can try before contacting Apple Support:

Verify Bluetooth / Find My Settings

  • Check:
    • Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth
    • Make sure **Find My is enabled**
  • Also:
    • Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Find My
    • Set to While Using the App
    • Enable Precise Location

Verify Ultra Wideband (U1 chip) Settings

Your iPhone 12 uses the U1 chip for Precision Finding. If that’s bugged, you’ll see exactly what you described: “not reachable” even when nearby.

Try:

  • Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → System Services
  • Toggle Networking & Wireless OFF → restart phone → turn it back ON

iCloud / Find My sync

Since your Mac works, your iPhone may not be syncing correctly with iCloud.

Try this reset on your iPhone to refresh Find My device syncing:

  1. Settings → [your name]
  2. Sign out of iCloud
  3. Restart iPhone
  4. Sign back in

Bluetooth stack bug

Even after resets, iOS can hold onto a corrupted Bluetooth state.

Try a deeper reset:

  • Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings

(This won’t erase data, but resets system configs.)

Finally verify that Find My network is not disabled

  • Settings → [your name] → Find My → Find My iPhone
    • Make sure:
      • Find My iPhone = ON
      • Find My network = ON
