MacBook Air Calendar alerts not appearing, account reverts

I have a MacBook Air (M1) running Tahoe 26.3.1.

The Calendar app does not display alerts when the account is set to “On My Mac,” but it does when set to iCloud. However, after switching the account to iCloud and restarting the app, it automatically reverts to “On My Mac” and alerts stop appearing.

How can I fix this?

To fix the Calendar app reverting to "On My Mac," change your default calendar destination permanently in the app's settings. Open Calendar, go to Settings > General, and select an iCloud calendar under Default calendar. If the setting fails to stick, toggle iCloud account sync off and back on.
