iPhone requires passcode after overnight update

You will be asked to enter your Passcode if you:

• Turn on or restart your device
• Press the Home button or swipe up to unlock your device (you can change this)
• Update your software
• Erase your device
• View or change passcode settings
• Install iOS or iPadOS Configuration profiles

If your phone updated, this is why you were asked to enter your Passcode. Face/Touch ID is not a replacement for your Passcode, so make sure you have written it down somewhere so you can't forget it.

And you’re required to input passcode at least every 48 hours if none of the above happens.

this is to help prevent you from forgetting your passcode….
