Mac Studio M4 Max and OWC Thunderbay 4 External Drive connectivity

Since the idiots at Apple have done away with any meaningful way to store and access large (24TB and up) collections of files, I have chosen OWC Thunderbay 4 to house my photography client files.


The OWC Thunderbay 4 is connected to my Mac Studio M4 with a Thunderbolt 5 cable. Sometimes it mounts, sometimes not. Accesing files frequently results in the beach ball.

2 TB Solid State Apple Fabric Drive (Using 1.15 of 2 TB for photos, docs, system files and apps)

Anyone have this issue? Anyone have a workaround or better method of storage?

Thunderbolt is a high-frequency, hot-swappable bus. Even a microsecond interruption in signal causes macOS to instantly cut power/data to the drives to protect the bus. When the enclosure drops and attempts to silently re-mount, or when macOS tries to wake sleeping spinning hard drives inside the Thunderbay, Finder halts and throws the spinning beach ball while waiting for the hardware handshakes to clear.

Step 1: Immediate macOS & Setup Tweaks

  1. Stop Hard Drives From Sleeping (Critical)
  2. When spinning hard disks spin down to save power, macOS stalls for 5–10 seconds every time Finder tries to access a file, fetch a thumbnail, or index metadata.
    • Go to System Settings > Energy Saver (or Displays / Lock Screen depending on settings layout).
    • Uncheck "Put hard disks to sleep when possible".
    • Ensure display/system sleep is set to Never when plugged in.
  1. Ditch the Thunderbolt 5 Cable (Temporarily)
  2. The OWC ThunderBay 4 utilizes Thunderbolt 3/4 controllers. While Thunderbolt 5 cables are backward-compatible on paper, mixing passive/active TB5 cables with TB3/4 controllers across Apple Silicon ports can occasionally cause handshake hiccups.
    • Swap back to an official Thunderbolt 4 (or Thunderbolt 3) 0.7m–1.0m cable to isolate controller sync issues.
  1. Check SoftRAID / Driver Stack
  2. If your ThunderBay runs SoftRAID (as opposed to Apple Software RAID or JBOD):
    • Ensure your SoftRAID driver is updated for your specific macOS version.
    • Outdated SoftRAID drivers on Apple Silicon trigger frequent silent drive ejections and kernel wait-state beach balls.
  1. Isolate Apple Silicon Port Buses
  2. On the Mac Studio M4 Max, the ports map across separate internal PCIe root complexes.
    • Connect the Thunderbay directly to a rear Thunderbolt port.
    • Make sure it is not plugged into a Thunderbolt dock or hub.
    • Secure the connection using a cable anchor (like an OWC ClingOn) so micro-vibrations don't cause physical signal drops.

Step 2: Better Alternatives for Photography Archives (24TB+)

While the ThunderBay 4 is a legacy staple, direct-attached spinning HDD arrays over Thunderbolt have become a weak link for high-throughput Apple Silicon setups.

  • Option A: Switch to a 10GbE Network Attached Storage (NAS) — Best Overall Solution
  • Moving your active archive to a 4-bay or 6-bay NAS (such as a Synology DS1621+ or QNAP) connected via 10Gb Ethernet directly to your Mac Studio's built-in 10GbE port:
    • Eliminates Thunderbolt sleep dropouts completely (SMB network mounts do not stall macOS the way physical bus drops do).
    • Allows background parity rebuilding (RAID 5/6) without tying up your Mac's kernel.
    • Lets you access photo catalogs over your home network from multiple machines.
  • Option B: USB-C Direct-Attached Enclosures (JBOD / Hardware RAID)
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 protocols do not feature the instant hard-eject safety behavior that Thunderbolt employs when a signal blips. A hardware-RAID enclosure over 10Gbps USB-C is often far more stable on Apple Silicon than legacy Thunderbolt enclosures relying on software RAID drivers.
  • Option C: Tiered Direct-Attached SSD + HDD Backup Archive
  • Keep active client projects (e.g., current year, ~4TB–8TB) on a dedicated OWC Express 1M2 NVMe SSD or SanDisk Desk Drive for raw performance, and use the ThunderBay purely as an offline scheduled target (via Carbon Copy Cloner) rather than keeping it constantly mounted for active working files.
