Saving multi-stop routes in Apple Maps for future use

Not a question, but a solution:

In Apple Maps, once you've planned your stops and the routes you'll take between them, go to the Step by Step directions and scroll all the way to the bottom. You'll find a Share button down there. Clicking this generates a URL that can be copied/saved/shared. For example, you can share it to Notes and give the note a name for the itinerary. Later, when you're ready to travel, open that note and click on the URL. Apple Maps will launch and the stops and routes that you previously established will load in.

This is a really useful tip! I had no idea you could do this with Apple Maps. I've always used third-party apps for saving multi-stop routes because I thought Apple Maps couldn't do it.

One thing I'd add - if you're using a Mac, you can also save these routes as Guides in Apple Maps. Just create a new Guide, add your stops as favorites, and it'll remember the route. You can access the same guide from your iPhone if you have iCloud syncing turned on for Maps.

Another workaround that works well for me is using the Shortcuts app to create a custom shortcut that opens Apple Maps with multiple destinations. It's a bit more setup but it makes reusing the same route super quick.

Thanks for sharing this! Definitely helping a lot of people who've been looking for this feature.

Checking again to see if anything changed. I'm getting inconsistent results. Sometimes I see the Share button at the bottom of the step-by-step directions, other times I don't.

As I remember trying it out in the field back in April, it wasn't a trouble-free solution. Perhaps the Share was more for informational purposes than real-time navigation.

That said, here's one of the URLs: https://maps.apple/r/p6A1K7-WZ51yDy

And when I see the Share button, it looks like this:

The thing about Guides is you have to remember to create the guide first, then add the places after. When I'm planning a day out, I tend to start with the question "when do I have to leave the house to get to the first stop on time?" and once I map that I go on to add other stops and by the time I've got what I want to save, it's too late to make it a Guide.

Which is all so weird. If Apple can remember my itinerary (there might be a better word for this) with a URL, wouldn't it be easy to "send to" a guide? Or for that matter, just save the itinerary in a new category under "Places" which is what folks have been asking for.
