Upgrade from iOS 16 to iOS 18 or 26?

Hello everyone, I have an iPhone 13 running iOS 16. The battery health is at 75%. The phone is still performing very well, so I haven’t updated it for a long time. Now i've decided to switch to ios 18.7.7 or ios 26.4.1., but I’m worried it might slow down my phone. Which version would you recommend?

iPhone 13, iOS 16

You should update. As Kurtosis12 has stated, you might get a performance hit because your battery is degraded (and will probably degrade even faster now).

I believe choosing to update to iOS 18.7.7 is no longer an option for iPhones that can run 26 (such as the 13). It is HIGHLY recommended you update to the latest version as it contains highly critical security updates.

You have three choices:

--Update now in order to benefit from enhanced security

-- Buy a new phone

-- Don't do anything and run the risk of running outdated software.

Currently, iOS 26.4.1 is the only version available for the iPhone 13. However, in April, iOS 18.7.7 was released for devices that have not yet been updated to iOS 26.

I believe that iOS 18.7.7 is only available for the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. For them, iOS 18 is "the end of the line."

I prefer not to replace the battery, as I plan to change my phone in about 10 months.

If you stay on iOS 16, iMessages and FaceTime will stop working after next January.

There are patches for iOS 12, 15, 16, 17, and 18 for phones that can't update any further than that. Since your phone can run iOS 26, the only way to get the patch for it is to update to iOS 26 (or later).

Apple made 18.7.7 and 18.7.8 available for iPhones capable of 26, presumably because of the large number of security patches they contain.
