Apple account compromised. How to retrieve or close it .

I got an email that my Apple account password and security questions were changed.

I was able to reset the password to the account quickly.

However, when I try to reset the security questions, it asks me to answer the security questions.

When I contacted support, they are saying they can't do anything about it and asked me to contact gmail, which is absurd.

What options do I have. Can I ask apple to close the apple account related to this email ID ?

This account is not linked to any device, however its linked to the primary gmail ID that I use.
