Rear camera video audio muffled with static on iPhone 15 Pro Max after third-party back glass repair

Hello everyone,

I recently got an iPhone 15 Pro Max handed down from my dad. He’s pretty rough on his devices, so it had a smashed back and a messed-up screen. Before giving it to me, he took it to a pretty questionable third-party technician for a repair.

Now, I’m running into a really weird audio issue and could use some insight.

The Problem: Whenever I try to record a video using the rear (main) camera, the audio is terrible. It sounds incredibly muffled, has this weird electrical static noise, and the volume is extremely low. For comparison, my old iPhone XS Max completely blows it out of the water in video audio quality.

Troubleshooting I’ve done:

  • Audio Settings: I already tried tweaking the sound recording settings based on some community suggestions. I changed the recording from stereo to mono, but it didn't help at all. Some posts also mentioned turning off "Spatial Audio," but I couldn't find that specific toggle on my device.
  • Voice Memos: I tested the microphone using the Voice Recorder app, and the audio sounds flawless.
  • Third-party apps: I thought it might be an Apple Camera app bug, but the exact same muffled/static issue happens when recording rear video on the Blackmagic Camera app.
  • Software: I’ve done a clean restore and updated to the latest iOS version, so I feel confident ruling out a software glitch.

My Theory: Because the back glass was just replaced by a subpar tech, I strongly suspect they might have used way too much glue and blocked or damaged the rear microphone. I saw another post mentioning a similar issue after a back glass replacement, but I want to be sure.

My Questions:

  1. Does the iPhone 15 Pro Max use different microphones based on the scenario? (e.g., Bottom mic for voice memos, but a different mic for rear video?)
  2. Has anyone else had their back glass replaced and faced this exact issue?
  3. If it is a glue/hardware issue, is there any realistic fix for this, or do I need to take it to a better repair shop to get it opened back up?

Any advice or insight would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!
