Need administrator password reset on old MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro purchased in 2020 is dead, worked fine one day, the next day would not turn on. I took it into an Apple Store and they said $700 repair and all data lost or purchase a new one. I purchased a MacBook Air. The MacBook I had prior to 2020 still works but extremely slow. There are some photos and files on it I want to migrate to the Air. Problem is my spouse was administrator and the password he recalls doesn't work. We entered his Apple ID and password to reset but it doesn't like that either. I also tried command + R for recovery mood after restarting but nothing happened. I would appreciate any suggestions.
