iPhone Bluetooth audio poor during calls or recording

The sound quality of media (music, videos, etc.) through Bluetooth headphones becomes severely degraded when the microphone is active — for example, during voice recording or any kind of phone call (Phone, QQ, WeChat, etc.). The audio gets noticeably muffled and blurry, almost like the narrowband quality of a VoLTE call limited to 50 Hz – 7 kHz.

A temporary workaround is to disconnect the Bluetooth headphones and then reconnect them.

This also appears to be a very common issue on iPhone, judging by posts in the Apple Community.

And PLEASE DON'T suggest generic troubleshooting steps like checking the iPhone audio settings, cleaning the earpiece, or even taking it to an Apple Store for repair. This is not a hardware problem with my specific device — it's a longstanding iOS system-level bug.

When an iPhone is connected to a car’s audio system via Bluetooth, it will not automatically switch to another Bluetooth device unless specific conditions are met. These are:

  1. The current Bluetooth connection is interrupted or lost, typically due to signal interference from nearby electronic devices, physical obstructions, or the car's Bluetooth system momentarily dropping the connection. However, this interference usually does not come from another Bluetooth audio device actively trying to take over.
  2. Once the iPhone is disconnected from the car’s Bluetooth, it may automatically connect to another previously paired Bluetooth device—but only if:
    1. That device is powered on, within range, and set to allow automatic connections.
    2. It was already paired and trusted by the iPhone in the past.
    3. The iPhone has not prioritized another known device for automatic connection (Apple devices tend to remember recent usage patterns).

In short, the iPhone won’t jump from one active Bluetooth audio device to another unless it gets dropped by the first and the second was already on friendly terms.

Bluetooth interference can potentially cause connectivity issues due to the disruption of the wireless communication between devices. Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency range, which is also used by various other devices such as Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, cordless phones, and even some baby monitors. When multiple devices are operating nearby and using the same frequency band, interference can occur.

Here's how Bluetooth interference can impact connectivity:

  1. Audio Streaming Interruptions: When you're streaming music via Apple Music or while playing audio content, Bluetooth interference can disrupt the connection between your device (such as an iPhone) and the Bluetooth speaker or headphones. This interference can result in the audio stuttering, dropping out momentarily, or experiencing poor sound quality.
  2. Bluetooth devices transmit data in packets. Interference can cause some of these packets to be lost or corrupted during transmission. As a result, the receiving device may have trouble decoding the audio correctly, leading to stuttering or delayed responses.
  3. Bluetooth signals can be weakened by interference from other devices operating on the same frequency band. If the signal strength drops significantly, it can affect the stability of the connection between your device and the Bluetooth accessory. This can result in intermittent stuttering as the connection struggles to maintain a consistent data flow.
  4. Bluetooth uses different channels within the 2.4 GHz frequency range to establish connections. When there are many Bluetooth devices nearby, multiple connections can create congestion on the available channels. This congestion can cause interference, leading to degraded performance for Apple Music streaming.

If you have a hearing or sound issue on your device then please try some of these processes to set it right

  1. If you have a distorted sound issue on your iPhone --> If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad
  2. If you are not able to hear the other person, click this...>If you can't hear a person on a call or voicemail or if the sound isn't ...
  3. If you only hear through speakerphone mode --> If your iPhone is stuck in headphone mode - Apple Support
  4. If the other person is not able to listen to you then please click this to identify the issue --> If the microphones on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch aren't ...

If the above options do not mitigate the issues then Contact your carrier and then Contact Apple Support

There are several potential reasons for distorted voice calls on an iPhone. Here are some common factors that can contribute to this issue:

  1. A weak or unstable cellular network signal can result in voice call distortion. If the signal strength is low, the audio quality may suffer, leading to distortion, dropouts, or static during calls.
  2. High network traffic or congestion can affect voice call quality. When there are too many users trying to access the network simultaneously, it can result in degraded call quality or distortion.
  3. It's recommended to keep your iPhone's software up to date and regularly check for app updates.
  4. If you are using a Bluetooth headset or speakerphone during calls, interference or compatibility issues can lead to distorted audio. Try disconnecting any connected Bluetooth devices and check if the voice quality improves.
  5. Voice call distortion can also be attributed to problems on the network provider's end. Temporary network outages, infrastructure issues, or maintenance work can affect call quality in specific areas or during certain times.

If you're experiencing persistent voice call distortion on your iPhone, it's recommended to troubleshoot the problem by following these steps:

  1. Check your network signal strength and switch to a different location if possible to see if the issue persists.
  2. Restart your iPhone to refresh the software and temporary settings.
  3. Disable any Bluetooth devices connected to your iPhone during calls and check if the distortion improves.
  4. Verify that your iPhone's software is up to date and install any available updates.
  5. Contact your network provider to inquire about any known issues in your area.
  6. If the problem persists, consider contacting or visiting an Apple authorized service center to diagnose and address any hardware-related problems.

Audio issues are not always the fault of the iOS update!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.
