Mac Mini M4 upgrade: What to expect?

I've been using an old Macbook running Catarina. It totally crashed a while ago, I reinstalled, but couldn't get on with it so I went back, first to an old laptop running Linux and then to an old Mac Mini running High Sierra. I see now I must upgrade to a new machine and my option will probably be a Mac Mini with the following features:

  • Apples M4-chip
  • 10-kärnig processor
  • 256 GB SSD & 16 GB RAM
  • 10-kärnig grafikprocessor
  • 12,7 × 12,7 cm stor


My question is what surprises am I likely to meet in using a so up-to-date machine. I realise I might have to get a newer version of my favourite programs, but what else. I don't actually know what is worrying me other than spending a lot of money on a new computer which might be too complicated.

The M4 Mac mini will be much, much faster, provided that it has enough RAM for the workload you are running.


I'm making assumptions here, but if your old MacBook was running Catalina, and that was "the end of the line", we would be talking about a machine with a model year of maybe 2012 or 2013. Let us use a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with a 2.6 GHz quad-core Core i7, and a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M GPU, for our baseline.


  • Single-core CPU benchmark score: 1,063 vs. 3,748. (M4 Mac mini's score is about 3.5x higher).
  • Multi-core CPU benchmark score: 3,598 vs. 14,467. (M4 Mac mini's score is about 4x higher).
  • Metal (GPU) score: 1684 vs. 56,887. (M4 Mac mini's score is about 33.8x higher).
  • FP32 (GPU) score: 742.7 GFLOPS vs. 4,260 GFLOPS. (M4 Mac mini's score is about 5.7x higher).


If we look at ports, that MBP would have USB-A (USB 3.0) ports, a HDMI port, and Thunderbolt 2 ports that are now useful mainly as Mini DisplayPorts. A M4 Mac mini would have USB-C ports that supported USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps), USB4 20 and 40 Gbps, and Thunderbolt 4, allowing for use of very fast external SSDs (if desired).


The SSD built into the M4 Mac mini is also likely to be faster than the one built into a Retina MacBook Pro. (If by any chance, your old MBP is one that starts up off a mechanical hard drive, there will be no comparison at all.)


I would suggest reconsidering going with only a 256 GB SSD. Even if you plan to put most bulk data on an external drive, you probably want at least a 512 GB SSD. With regard to RAM, you should order as much as you need, or are likely to need, as you cannot upgrade RAM after purchase. The plain M4 Mac mini is available with 16, 24, or 32 GB of RAM – and if you are thinking of running, say, the Adobe suite, you might want more than 16 GB.

With Apple Silicon processors, RAM is not located in sockets. The dies are mounted next to the main System on Chip. While this does have the effect of keeping you from buying extra RAM later, it appears that the main factor driving this decision was performance. Apple Silicon architecture assumes that there is a single pool of RAM that all of the computing units (CPU cores, GPU cores, Neural Engine cores, I/O controllers, etc.) can access - and the idea is to give the SoC a high-speed interconnect to RAM that lets it keep all hardware units supplied with data.


For instance, here is an illustration of a M1 Max (from the October 21 Apple Newsroom article Introducing M1 Pro and M1 Max: the most powerful chips Apple has ever built).


The M1 Max is the chip in the middle, and the four squares around the sides are the RAM dies. A M1 Max chip is surrounded by four dies – twice as many as surround a plain M1 chip or a M1 Pro chip. The arrangement permits the M1 Max chip to read data from, or write data to, all four RAM dies at the same time – and provides GPU cores with the sort of memory bandwidth that, on Wintel PCs, would normally only be available to discrete GPUs.



Although the M1 Pro and M1 chips are less powerful, even the plain M1 chip had an integrated GPU that was faster than the integrated GPUs of most Intel chips of the day.

I would suggest to get at least 512GB internal storage and preferably 1 TB. A 256GB SSD will get filled up in a hurry these days. Even with external storage, many vendors are storing more and more data in the hidden user library folder, especially those leveraging AI.


Also, you need to look at the third party apps that you are using as they may not be compatible with the macOS or the M4 chip that is in the new MacMini and either purchase upgrades to compatible versions or find alternatives to them. Also note that when macOS 27 comes out (current version is 26), Intel based apps will no longer work.

You'll experience much greater speed. My Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB of RAM is about 10 times faster tham my 2017 i7 iMac with a 1 TB SSD boot drive.


This is my setup: just so you know a 10 Core Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD ($1084 US) with a 32" LG 4k monitor ($331 US) from Amazon.com)  is $1415 US which is $541US less than a similarly configured new 24" iMac ($1956 US)  re 07/2025. Keep your keyboard and mouse from your current Mac for use with the Mini.  It should be about the same savings in your currency


I got the above Mini with a 32" LG 4K monitor w/speakers for only $60 US more than the 27" (didn't know the Mini had a speaker).  There are many monitors available in 27" size for $100 US to $500 US depending on what features you want.  The prices are before tariffs. Be sure to use hightest quality HDMI or other monitor connecting cable.
