Mac audio not playing on TV for VCR recording

Hello! I am trying to create a video compilation on VHS. To do this I am connecting my mac to my VCR TV and recording onto a tape. I have gotten the picture to mirror from mac to TV using hdmi to av as well as an adapter for usbc to plug into the mac. However I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the audio to play through the TV speakers. I have changed the output and attempted to edit things via audio MIDI setup but the audio will not transfer. Every time I switch it from mac speakers to the VCR it goes silent. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

To get audio playing from your Mac to your VCR/TV, your cheap HDMI-to-AV converter box might only be passing video signals, or the Mac is sending digital audio that the analog RCA converter cannot decode. Ensure the converter has a power cable plugged in, and manually check your Mac's Sound Settings to see if the HDMI device is recognized as an active audio output rather than just a display.

For completeness, what Mac and what sub-model it is? Over the years, port type and availability in Macs have evolved. That might enhance or restrict your transfer options.
