iPad Battery Health at ~230 cycles

Is it normal to be at 90% battery capacity after 228 charge cycles? I practice optimal charging habits, and I have an iPad Air 11-inch (M2), purchased in July 2024. At what point should I consider replacement of either the battery or the iPad itself if my battery keeps degrading at this rate?

"Battery health" is influenced by many factors.


An iPad battery is rated to retain 80% of its original capacity (when new) after 1000 full recharge cycles. Any combination of charging that together sums to 100% equates to one full charge cycle (e.g., 50% + 20% + 20% + 10% = 100% = 1 full charge cycle). As such, reducing the number of times that the iPad is recharged will slow the rate that the iPad's battery health will decline due to recharging.


Other factors can influence overall battery health. High ambient temperatures can permanently reduce the battery's ability to retain full charge - as can maintaining the battery at 100% charge for very long periods of time that leads to chemical aging of the battery. Limiting the battery charge to ~80% of maximum can in some circumstances reduce the chemical aging effect.

Independent studies have demonstrated that restricting charging to only 80% of maximum has little if any impact upon the overall longevity or health of the iPad's battery. There is generally no need to micromanage your iPad's charging strategies.

That sounds like a normal battery to me.


First, a battery's capacity, or "health," naturally goes down as it is used. Rechargeable batteries have finite life span before the chemicals inside that make it work are depleted.


Second: Others here estimate that the average battery's "health" will decrease at the rate of about one percent a month. Yours is ~22 months old, so you are doing it right.


Third: Battery capacity decline is non-linear. Almost every battery-powered Apple device I've owned shows a reduced rate of decline between 90% and the arbitrary 80% line where Apple recommends battery replacement. Our oldest iPad, an iPad 2 bought in early 2012, has its original battery and still delivers a usable runtime, even though health is in the 70% range. It has about 1500 cycles last I checked. It get used a little every day for an old game that was never updated to run on newer iPadOS versions. When the battery goes, the ancient iPad will meet the recycler.


The best single piece of advice I can give is, "Enjoy your iPad and don't obsess over the battery!"
