iPad volume changes to full blast when using Guided Access

Does your volume change to full blast even though it was at 50% when you started guided access? You aren’t alone. I updated the iPad and turned guided access on and off. I searched the forums/discussions and came away with nothing useful. It’s a bug period-whether it’s related to volume normalization functions on the iPad warring with the one’s on YouTube or not-as it also affects the guided access passcode keypad-see photo. Since I couldn’t find any answers that actually helped, I messed around with my child’s for a bit. I also couldn’t find an open query that I could respond to. So I created this “question“.

The only way I could get around the issue is the following:

  1. Close all apps.
  2. Change the volume to the desired level.
  3. Hold down the power button until the iPad powers off.
  4. Wait 60 seconds and power the iPad back on.
  5. Check the volume to make sure it is still where you want it.
  6. Open up YouTube and play a video. It should be playing at the correct volume.
  7. Triple click the home button three times to turn on guided access. The video should continue at the level you set.
  8. Next, close that video and open a new one to make sure that the volume remains at the level you want. If it does, then you are good to go and you shouldn’t have any surprises.

Thank you for sharing your workaround - this is indeed a confirmed bug in iPadOS where Guided Access resets the volume to maximum when activated. Your solution of powering the device off/on before activating Guided Access is a valid fix.

Here are a couple of additional approaches that may also help:

1. Lock volume via Guided Access settings before activating:

- Before triple-clicking to start Guided Access, go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access

- Check if "Hardware Buttons" section has volume buttons locked or unlocked

- Try disabling the volume buttons within Guided Access so the system can't auto-change them

2. Use Assistive Touch to set volume:

- Enable Settings > Accessibility > Touch > AssistiveTouch

- Use the on-screen volume slider to set volume after Guided Access starts

- This can override the system volume reset

3. Try setting volume via Control Center before activating Guided Access:

- Swipe down Control Center and set volume

- Then immediately activate Guided Access

4. Submit feedback to Apple:

- This is clearly a bug that needs an official fix

- Report it at feedbackassistant.apple.com with the steps to reproduce

- The more users who report it, the faster Apple will patch it

Your workaround of restarting the device before each Guided Access session is the most reliable fix until Apple releases a patch.

This is happening on my iPhone as well. Some apps are worse than others. For example, Netflix will automatically go to full volume no matter what I do versus Disney+ will keep the volume set as long as the video is playing when I start guided access. If the video is paused when I start guided access it will automatically play and set full volume.

I’ve been using guided access for years but is has been fundamentally broken due to bugs for the past 2+ years.
