Camera App Broken After Updating to iOS 26.4.2 – Black Screen & Freezing

Camera App Broken After Updating to iOS 26.4.2 – Black Screen & Freezing

Hi Apple Community,

Ever since updating my iPhone to iOS 26.4.2, my Camera app has been unusable. I’m experiencing two consistent issues:

• Black screen – The camera opens but shows a completely black viewfinder instead of a live preview.

• Freezing – The app freezes mid-use, requiring a force quit to recover.

This started immediately after the update — the camera worked perfectly before. I haven’t made any other changes to my device.

What I’ve already tried:

• Force quitting and reopening the Camera app

• Restarting the iPhone

• Checking Camera permissions (Settings > Privacy > Camera)

Has anyone else run into this after 26.4.2? And does anyone from Apple support have a fix or workaround? I’d love to know if a patch is in the works.

Thanks in advance!

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 26

Yes, it certainly can be related to a recent update, but it can also be an indication of component failure. The best way to determine the true issue is make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store Genius Bar and have them run diagnostics on your device. If that’s inconvenient, remote diagnostics can be done by calling Apple Support. However, remote diagnostics is not as accurate and your device may still be experiencing a hardware failure.

If the Camera App on your device seems dysfunctional and you’re attributing it to an iOS update, consider this. If the update itself were the cause, then every user who installed that version of iOS would experience the same issue. In that case, the forums would be overflowing with complaints. Since no such widespread reports exist, it strongly suggests that this is not an iOS-level problem but rather a device-specific issue.

Camera App issues are not always the fault of the iOS update!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.
