iPad battery cycle count increases with partial charges

I’ve noticed something odd with my iPad’s battery cycle count.

Today, I charged it twice—first from 18% to 80%, and later from 30% to 60%. Both times, the cycle count increased by 1 (so +2 in the same day).

As far as I understand, a full charge cycle should only count after 100% cumulative usage, not for partial charges.

Is this normal behaviour, or is there something wrong with my battery stats?

Device: iPad a16 (ios 26.4.2)

I bought this recently in April.

Charge Cycles are based on "discharge" not actually the charges that are made, contrary to the name being charge cycles.

  • One charge cycle is completed after you’ve discharged 100% of your battery’s capacity.

Batteries - Why Lithium-ion? - Apple

So in your example, it certainly is possible to see 2 charge cycles. Consider yesterday that if you have an accumulated discharge of 90%, that is not quite enough to count as a charge cycle and today you discharged your battery for a total of 110%, that would amount to 2 charge cycles. The charge percentages make no difference, it is how much the battery has discharged.
