iPhone 17 performance and UI issues after iOS 26.4.2 update
Enormous amount of bugs and performance issues on iOS 26.4.2 (iPhone 17). iOS 26.4.2 is the worst iOS experience I’ve had in years. I updated from iOS 26.0.1 to 26.4.2 six days ago.
1. System-wide UI stutters and freezes
- Noticeable lag when scrolling (Settings, Photos, Safari). Smooth at the start, but stutters as scrolling slows down
- Frequent lag when switching tabs or navigating back/forward in Safari
- Home screen page swipes occasionally freeze
2. Severe lag in wallpaper editor
- After ~10 minutes, the device heats up significantly
- UI becomes extremely laggy (almost slideshow-level)
3. AirPods Pro 2 connection delay
- Takes ~5 seconds to connect. It was less than 2 seconds on iOS 26.0.1. Happens consistently
4. Keyboard animation glitches
- Keyboard sometimes disappears without animation
- Layout jumps when dismissing the keyboard with a swipe
- Especially noticeable in the Notes app
5. Visual glitches in UI transitions
- Buttons flicker during state changes. Blur transitions feel broken (blur → sharp switch instead of smooth interpolation)
- Context menus have overly long, exaggerated animations with excessive position shifts. About a 1 second delay after tapping before the contextual menu opens. On 26.0.1 it was less than 0.5 seconds
6. Safari color adaptation bug
- A new tab initially shows colors from the previous page
- After ~2 seconds, it readjusts → visible brightness jump
7. Lock screen / wallpaper issues
- Wallpaper jumps out of blur when unlocking. Blur → sharp transition is not smooth
8. Text selection and cursor precision issues
- Difficult to highlight the correct word or move caret to the right position by tapping
- Selection handles sometimes get stuck while dragging down
- Cursor placement often misses the intended position. Feels like reduced touch precision
9. Camera quality regression
- Photos appear noticeably blurry
- Compared side-by-side with iPhone 12, the older device produces sharper images
10. Performance & battery
- Overall system feels slower than on iOS 26.0.1
- Battery life seems worse
11. Siri performance drop
- Long response time (2–3 seconds) for voice feedback after saying “Hey Siri”. On iOS 26.0.1 it worked instantly
- Sometimes no response after saying “Hey Siri”
- Worse speech recognition — for example, confusing 40 minutes with 10 minutes, which are completely different phrases
Conclusion
I would not recommend:
- buying the latest iPhone
- updating to iOS 26
Consider buying new Android devices. If returning the device was an option, I would do it without any doubt
iPhone 17, iOS 26
