This is an unusual but known issue where macOS or other Apple devices misidentify an iPhone as an iPad, often after an eSIM change or Watch restore. Here are some steps to resolve it:

1. Reset the device identifier on your Mac:

- Disconnect the iPhone from Mac

- On the Mac, open Finder and check if the phantom iPad still appears — if so, it may be a cached device record

- Restart your Mac, then reconnect the iPhone via USB

- Check if Finder now correctly identifies it as an iPhone

2. Check iPhone device name and settings:

- On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > About > Name

- Make sure the device name does not contain "iPad" — rename it to something clearly identifying it as your iPhone

- Also check Settings > General > About and confirm the Model Name shows as iPhone

3. Reset network settings on the iPhone:

- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings

- This can help clear any residual eSIM metadata that may be causing identifier confusion

4. Sign out and back into Apple ID:

- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Sign Out

- Then sign back in — this refreshes the device registration with Apple's servers and can correct misidentification

5. For the CarPlay/Bluetooth issue:

- In your RAM truck, go to the Bluetooth settings and delete the existing iPhone pairing

- Re-pair the iPhone from scratch — the device type label should update correctly after re-pairing

6. If the issue persists, contact Apple Support and reference the eSIM installation as a potential trigger — they can check device registration on the backend.

Then CarPlay displaying “iPad” is not expected behavior. It could indicate:

  • A temporary CarPlay cache issue.
  • A software bug in the vehicle’s infotainment system.
  • Not an iOS bug.

Device name in Settings > General > About

  • It’s true that you can check the device name there and rename it if needed.
  • However, the device name is not the device identity. It is simply a user-editable name.

Most cars today are designed to support either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay at a time, not both simultaneously. This limitation comes from how the infotainment system establishes a connection: it prioritizes one protocol (Android Auto or CarPlay) depending on the connected device.

Here’s how it typically works:

  • Single protocol per session: When you plug in an Android phone, the system launches Android Auto. If you later connect an iPhone, you’ll need to disconnect the Android device first, then switch to CarPlay.
  • Manual switching: Some cars allow you to toggle between Android Auto and CarPlay in the infotainment settings, but you still can’t run them side by side.
  • Device priority: If both devices are connected, the car usually defaults to the first one it detects. To change, you must remove or disable the current connection.
  • Reason for limitation: Running both simultaneously would require parallel handling of two distinct ecosystems, which complicates interface design, audio routing, and driver safety compliance.

A few premium or newer infotainment systems are starting to experiment with multi-device support, but it’s rare. For most drivers, the practical solution is:

  • Use Android Auto if you want to connect an Android device.
  • Disconnect and switch to CarPlay if you want to use an iPhone.
