floating mini keyboard on iPad wont switch to full docked version

Sometimes my iPad gives me the mini keyboard arbitrarily and won’t allow me to switch to the full docked version. Other times it will give me the full docked version in the same app doing the same thing. If I could switch from the mini as described in the support docs, I wouldn’t mind the arbitrary appearance of the mini, but it doesn’t allow me to change the keyboard.

This happens with various apps, including Safari, Mail, Newsletterss and Duolingo. The instructions for pinching to enlarge or selecting “docked” instead of “floating” do not work. The enlarged version won’t get very big and the keyboard snaps back to mini when the fingers lift. The checklist for floating or docked only contains the floating option. No docked option is in the list.

This is driving me crazy!!!

At the time of writing, iPadOS 26.4.2 is current. Consider updating your iPad to the current [supported] version of iPadOS.

Perhaps you are using the Scribble feature? When enabled, this feature uses a different mini-keyboard that does not respond to the two-finger zoom or pinch gestures:

Settings > Apple Pencil > Scribble - set to OFF

Otherwise, to restore the new Floating Keyboard to the normal on-screen keyboard presentation, use the two-finger “zoom” gesture (i.e., the reverse of the two-finger “pinch”).

If the Split Keyboard is restored instead of the full on-screen keyboard, you can either use two fingers (one on each of the two half-keyboards) and swipe the two halves together - or touch-and-hold the “keyboard” key, then slide your finger to the Merge & Dock option and release.
