problem removing item from menubar

I have an app in my Sequoia menubar (AppLocker). I like that app very much, but I don't need it in my menubar anymore. I try to pull it off with the command key, but when I do, it shows a circle with a line through it. As in NO CAN DO. I have checked that the app is no longer enabled in login items. How do I remove it?

iMac 24″, macOS 15.7

Within AppLocker Settings

Click the AppLocker icon in the menu bar.

Look for Preferences or Settings.

Uncheck the option that says "Show in Menu Bar" or similar

You kill AppLocker in the Activity Monitor, and the icon in the menubar goes away, as does all the AppLocker functionality. That doesn't help any.

I have to assume that when I installed it, I was asked if I wanted it to be in the menubar, and I said yes. I guess I have to delete it entirely, and reinstall the app, this time NOT asking it to be int he menubar. You'd think there would be some easier way to do it. You'd like to believe the Control Center would offer that choice.

Well, you give the password, and the target app is unlocked. That's what the app does. It makes app usage somewhat secure. As in, don't allow this app to be used unless you supply a password. So after you unlock the app with AppLocker all you have is the menubar icon for it like you did originally. This is clearly a deficiency in the app, but my question was whether there is any setting in the OS that allows menubar items to be managed. Control Center allows menubar items to be managed, but just for OS supplied apps.

re: < AppLocker >

Never heard of it, and it seem highly unnecessary...

For your third party app——if in doubt search the developers website or contact their: Support/Help/FAQ/Known issues/compatibility/updates…

I've asked the developer. If he responds, we'll see. But Apple offers options on third-party apps. System Settings > General > Login Items allows third party app controls, and in Accessibility, you can specify which third party apps can control the system. You can select apps to appear or not appear in the dock. So it's not unreasonable to think that the OS might have some control over who is in the menubar.

Does it reappear when you relaunch it? I made the (perhaps erroneous) assumption that you were trying to remove it while the app was still running.

It could well be that the app requires the icon in the menu bar.

The fact that you've never seen it doesn't mean it's not a possibility. But really, the only people who can tell you this are the developers. I hope you'll hear back from them soon.

Some applications are programmed to run from the menu bar. I am not familiar with this one in particular, but if it doesn't offer any settings or options, does not have the regular menus, or appears in the app switcher (what you see with command-tab that lets with switch between running apps), then it is just a "menu bar app", meaning that if it does not show there you have no access to the application - hence, you cannot use it...

In macOS 15 Sequoia.

The direct equivalent to managing the Menu Bar is found under System Settings > Control Center, specifically within the "Menu Bar" section.

Here, you can customize icons, behavior, and appearance, including the ability to show/hide the background, set auto-hide, and manage menu bar items for modules like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

OK, I have a response from the developer. He says that in Tahoe, you go into System Settings to "Menu Bar", and you can select whether the app appears there. In Sequoia though, there is no "Menu Bar" in System Settings. Does Tahoe really offer that option that Sequoia does not?

Yes, I think so. I looked up Menu Bar Settings in the User Guide:

Change Menu Bar settings on Mac - Apple Support

If you change from Tahoe to Sequoia in the drop down menu at the top, you get something very different. And it doesn't address your issue.

I think you need to respond to the developer and explain you're using Sequoia. Going forward, it's always a good idea to include model and OS when asking questions like that. Of course, if you did and the developer ignored it, well, that seems like a bit of a red flag.

Yes, the developer knows I have Sequoia, but he only has Tahoe, so he can't offer any advice.

One of the unfortunate things about dealing with a one-person operation. They may not have the ability to test across multiple devices and operating systems. That's not a knock, just an observation.

I think you may be stuck with the Menu Bar item.
