Apple Maps direction wrong, Compass app accurate on iPhone

Some apps (like Apple Maps) show the phone pointing in the wrong direction, even though the Compass app knows which direction the phone is pointing in.

I start with the phone pointing due south. Apple Maps shows the directional pointer pointing south. Switch to the compass app. Rotate the physical phone so that it's pointing east. Note that the compass registers correctly that I've rotated the phone. Switch back to Apple Maps. The directional pointer still (incorrectly) shows the phone pointing south. I know it's not frozen, since if I move slightly south you can see the blue location dot moving.

This is bizarre to me because I would have just assumed that both the Compass app and the Maps app would make the same OS API call to figure out which way the phone is pointing, so I would never have expected one of them to be right but not the other one. Presumably this means most of the standard compass "troubleshooting" steps (no metal objects, no magnetic phone cases, etc.) don't apply, because the Compass app does know which way the phone pointing. What's going on and can it be fixed?

This is preventing other apps like Moon Tracker from working properly for me because I want to know when the moon will be at a certain spot in the sky but the app sometimes doesn't know which way the phone is pointing even when the compass does.

In Settings -> General -> Privacy and Security -> Location Services, the "Compass" app has settings enabled "Allow Location Access: While Using the App" and "Precise Location" is enabled. The Maps application has similar settings enabled: "Allow Location Access: While Using the App or Widgets" and "Precise Location" is enabled (along with access to "Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations" and "Visited Places" which I assume is not relevant here). Also under Location Services -> System Services, "Compass Calibration" and "Motion Calibration & Distance" are both enabled, since some troubleshooting steps refer to those.

(The compass also appears to be slightly off -- I'm holding the phone pointing straight south and the compass is off by a few degrees -- but I assume that's a separate problem.)

The pic below is self-explanatory

Filled blue arrow (solid): Pic 1

Meaning: Your location + direction are locked in accurately
The tip of the arrow shows exactly where you’re headed
👉 This appears when GPS + motion sensors are confident (best case for navigation)

🔷

Blue arrow with a faint line/cone pointing forward :Pic 2

Meaning: Your direction is estimated within a range
That line/cone shows possible directions you might be facing
👉 Narrow cone = more accurate, wide cone = less sure

🔷

Hollow blue arrow (outline): Pic 3

Meaning: Your location is correct, but the direction is unclear
Happens when:
- You’re stationary
- Sensors haven’t picked up movement yet
👉 The arrow may not point where you’re actually facing

In short:

Solid arrow → “I know exactly where you’re going”
Hollow arrow → “I know where you are, not your heading”
Arrow + line/cone → “You’re facing somewhere in this range”

OK I experimented with the arrow, the one above the car icon that you can toggle between three modes by tapping it. It seems like the icons mean:

solid blue arrow pointing up and to the right -- the map is displayed with north at the top, and remains centered on you, so as you move, the map scrolls to keep you in the center
hollow blue arrow pointing up and to the right -- the map is displayed with north at the top, but remains static as you move. So if you move far enough the blue dot eventually disappears off the side of the map
solid blue arrow pointing straight up - the map is displayed so the direction at the top is the direction that the phone is pointing

But none of this matches what you wrote. I don't understand where you were getting that info from?

Sorry but I cannot make sense of what these pictures mean based on your description. Did you create this picture or get it from somewhere?

For example, if I tap the arrow (as indicated by the fingertip), it cycles between the three states indicated in the pictures: solid (pointing up and to the right) as in the first picture, solid and pointing straight up (as in the second picture, and in that case it also re-orients the map so that the "up" direction is the direction the phone is pointing), or hollow (pointing up and to the right) as in the third picture. But I cannot reconcile this with the descriptions you wrote. How can the phone switch between "high confidence in the direction it's facing" and "low confidence in the direction it's facing" just because I tapped an icon with my finger?

Thanks, yes to get this video I waited until I was far enough away from my house that the "home" icon wouldn't show up on the map :)
