I am trying to change my primary email id as this will no longer be functioning soon. When i tried to change it to my other (gmail id) it says that the gmail id is my 'notification email' so i cant use that. What am i supposed to do?

Remove the address as your notification email address and then try using it. Note that Apple's outlines as to email re-use are somewhat unclear, so if you have problems doing that they you may have to wait before using that address or possibly you will have to try a different address.
