MacBook Air M2 external display only works in clamshell mode

External display only works in clamshell mode I have a MacBook Air M2 chip running Tahoe v 26.4.1.

It is connected to an Value-Top external display by way of an HDMI to adapter to USB C port in the MacBook. The power charger cord is connected to the other USB C port.

When the MacBook is closed (Clamshell mode) the external monitor display works perfectly. If I open the MacBook the external display goes totally black. How do I correct this? I have included a screen shot of the display settings in system preferences. There is no option to turn mirroring on or off. Also, while I have checked show mirroring options in menu bar, nothing is there.

Hi,

If your MacBook Air M2 external display only works in clamshell mode, it is likely due to power-saving settings, display arrangement issues, or a need to force-detect the display while open. Fix this by ensuring the laptop is powered, adjusting system display settings, or checking cable connections.

Key Troubleshooting Steps:

  • Ensure Power is Connected: Clamshell mode (and external display functionality) on M2 Air often requires the MacBook to be connected to power, as well as a monitor.
  • Force Display Detection: Open System Settings > Displays, hold down the Option key, and click "Detect Displays".
  • Check "Prevent Sleep" Settings: In System Settings > Displays > Advanced, ensure the Mac is not set to sleep when the display is off.
  • Toggle Mirroring: If the display goes black upon opening, go to System Settings > Displays to check if "Mirroring" is activated. Changing from "Extended" to "Mirroring" and back can sometimes reset it.
  • Check Cable/Adapter: The issue is often due to faulty adapters or HDMI/USB-C cables not passing the proper display signal when the lid is open.
  • Adjust Resolution: Sometimes, setting the external monitor to its default resolution rather than a higher scaled resolution resolves this behavior.
