iPad slow on iPhone hotspot

Around April 1, 2026, when connecting my iPad to my iPhone 16e hotspot through T-mobile, my iPad’s speed crawls. At work, my phone downloads at 350 Mbps. My iPad was at around 200 Mbps February and March. Then in April, my iPad was, and still is, at .02 Mbps.

I’m trying at a different location (60 miles away)

today. My phone is at about 200 and iPad still at .02. It is crazy to have a faster upload speed!

I contacted TMobile. I haven’t even used a Gig of data yet this cycle. He had me reset my network settings and did some thing on his end. But he had to escalate it.

I haven’t tried it at home on wifi. Didn’t dawn on me.

Anyone else have this? I tried searching through discussions here before posting, but couldn’t find anything.

I saw that TMobile did some kind of Security update on 4/2, and Apple has done 26, etc.

Perhaps a long shot:

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed on your iPad or iPhone, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN, then restart your devices. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. Updates sometimes "break" VPN, and it needs to be removed. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN, but probably shouldn't.

If your iPad's network connection is not performing as expected, a reset your iPad's network settings may resolve the problem:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings

Your iPad will restart. If the problem persists, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

The Personal Hotspot is a cellular feature that is controlled by them. As always make sure your device is updated to the latest OS version and that will also allow any Carrier Update for improvements in cellular connectivity that are sent from your provider. If you only experience the slow speed when connected to Hotspot, the solution will have to come from T-Mobile.

If what you are saying is at different locations, the speed is different, I believe it is excepted since the distance between satellites, and signals for hotspot varies, and inside the building they can have vpn/hotspot blockers, or the materials slows internet waves. That is unavoidable.

HUH?! The Personal Hotspot does not use satellites at all. It uses the carrier’s cellular network.
