Formatting SSD for iPhone XS backup and MacPro compatibility

I want to back up an iphone 10s (17.6.1) to an SSD. How do I format the drive to accept the format compatible with the 10s. Can I share this drive with for backup to an older MacPro notebook running 10.6.8 OS?

You CAN back up to iCloud, but that may require you to pay a periodic fee to upgrade your iCloud storage to store that backup.

Otherwise, iPhone requires a smart device to perform backups. it can not back up its data to a bare drive. The Approved Method is to back up to your Mac.

On Macs running MacOS 10.15 Catalina or later, that capability is built into the Finder. On older Macs, it appears inside iTunes when the iPhone is connected by a cable.

iPhone XS appears to have a Lightning connector, which can be connected to a MacBook Pro using a Lightning to USB-A cable.

so the Approved Method is to backup your iPhone to your Mac, and that backup will be backed up to your Mac backup set when you back up your Mac

You’ll most likely be backing up to iCloud, here.

The alternative for local backups of that iPhone XS is acquiring a PC, or acquiring a replacement Mac.

Neither that SSD nor that MacBook Pro 10.6 are going to be all that useful for iPhone XS backups, and probably not (due to SSD capacity restrictions) all that useful for macOS Time Machine backups.

Per the tech specs, iPhone XS requires Windows 7 or later or Mac OS X 10.11.6 or later.
