iPhone Mail: Wife's Telstra emails go to junk

My wife’s email messages are going to my junk folder. We both use Telstra Australia’s email service. It happens when she sends from wife@bigpond.com to me@bigpond.com.au using the iPhone mail app. I’ve isolated a lot of possible cases:

  • It doesn’t happen if she sends it using the email.telstra.com webmail interface so it’s not server based rules
  • it doesn’t happen from me to her.
  • i installed Google Gmail client on her phone and that worked.
  • I’ve deleted and reinstalled both the mail account and the mail app.
  • I've spent hours on calls with Telstra’s support team.

it seems to be some weird interaction with the Apple mail app on her phone and the Telstra smtp server.

Any idea on thing for me to try?

Thank you but I don’t think that’s going to help. It’s happening on the server. I’ve tried training the mail server many times and it doesn’t happen when using either the webmail interface or the Gmail client in her phone.

OK. If it's on the server, that would be on Telstra to fix. Apple hosts the mail agent in the mail app, but the mail comes from the agent, not Apple.

Except it doesn’t happen if my wife uses the Google email client. I think it’s more complex than that.

Telstra and Gmail are two completely different email clients, so I'm not sure why you think there's anything linking them? Telstra is provided by Telstra. Gmail is provided by Google.

I've never used Telstra. My email provider is Yahoo. When I log into my Yahoo mail on my laptop, the laptop version provides a simple way to say a message is not Junk/Spam. Can you log into the Telstra account on a computer and see if they too offer this option?

Not sure I understand what you are saying @lobsterghost1. Telstra doesn’t provide a email client, other than webmail at email.telstra.com. For most of us, emails are sent using a protocol called smtp (simple mail transport protocol). This protocol lets the email client, the application in which you manage your email on the mobile device, to send the email to the server for delivery. My mail sending service is provided by Telstra at smtp.telstra.com. I have sent emails to this using two different email mobile clients, Apple’s Mail app and Google’s Gmail iPhone app.

The email goes to junk on the Telstra mail server using the Apple app but not using the Gmail app. There seems to be something about the Apple app that the Telstra server doesn’t like.

I'm not sure what else I can offer here. Telstra is providing email service like Google Gmail or Yahoo Mail provides email. The issue is on the Telstra Server side. This is something you need to get higher level technical support from Telstra.
