HitFilm Pro 4 & Motion issues/crashes on Mid 2011 iMac

hi all

need advice (explained simply 😂) on how to improve performance of my copies of hitfilm pro 4 and apple motion (with early version of mobject).

the technical stuff:

iMac 21.5” mid 2011

High sierra version 10.13.6

2.5 ghz intel core i5

16 gb 1333 mhz ddr3

Amd Radeon had 6750m 512mb

327.82 gb available of 499.24 gb

Hitfilm pro 4 version 4.0.0713 (update 8)

Motion version 5.4.3

Mobject version 1.3.2.1 (140219)

What I’d to achieve:

I’d like create animated graphics with motion/object, import to hitfilm and add hitfilm vfx to export to use on my iPad. Videos are maximum 15 seconds

Issues:

Ideally I’d like to reduce crashing of apps (crashes aren’t consistent), apps failing to start when opening (again inconsistent), crashing of hitfilm when video exported from motion is run during playback (not when importing into hf).

I’d like to be able to export 4K. I realise this will cause issues, but I’m having these issues at 1080p. I can create a doc in both apps at 4K with no problems apart from the warning alert. I’ll be happy with 2K if no workaround for 4K

Sometimes objects created with mobject don’t render in motion (once again inconsistent regardless of trying different settings of lighting and shadows in the mobject settings in motion).

I’ve looked into cloning internal hdd to external ssd, buying a refurbished 4K iMac, but as I’m not tech minded, I’ve totally confused myself 😂

thanks in advance

Mark

Hi Mark,

I haven't seen HitFilm mentioned here very often and the last time might have been about 10 or 11 years ago. The comments I've seen today when looking it up are mostly "HitFilm has always been a bit buggy" and "it's become completely unusable since Art List [whoever they are] took it over".

On the mObject side: I have version 1.3.2.1 currently installed on Mac OS 10.14.6 (Mojave). It does not work any longer (and it hasn't since I upgraded ... back then...). There may have improvements with mO2, but it is no longer supported as well. There is no mO3... yet.

An SSD would definitely improve performance provided all project assets were on the SSD, and Motion 5.4.x would perform better with more RAM (24 or more).

There are many issues working against you without the consideration of your hardware and I would hate to make a recommendation of spending more money on hardware that might not make any difference with the software you're having problems with.

BTW, I have a 2017 5k Retina iMac; 3.4GHz i5; 24GB 2400MHz DDR4; ;Radeon Pro 570 4GB. mObject 1.3.2.1 does not work in Motion on my system. It will load models in Final Cut 10.4.10, but parts of some models are misaligned with no way to fix them.

I hope you will be able to find a solution. Hopefully some others with more meaningful experience with HitFilm, etc. will contribute *soon*.

Hi fox_m

Thanks for reply, is appreciated. 👍 sorry for delay in replying, I only just saw your message at 2am Tues 12 May

I have one more question if you don’t mind having a look at, it’s at the end. Thanks

Oddly since posting on here mobject is now working fine “shrugs shoulders” without making any changes to iMac/hf/mobject/motion settings. I’ve worked out the crashing issue when using imported files from motion into hitfilm. I was using the wrong file type in export (4444hq, instead of 4444 which works fine).

Both apps still have trouble opening the first time (sometimes 🥴), I just use the option to view in finder and open directly from there, and on the third (or more) attempt they open. So far, I’ve not had any crashes while using any of the apps. I do a save after EVERY change just in case. 😂

However, I still would like to match the resolution to my videos on my YouTube channel, so I’m thinking I have one possible solution > Buy a refurbished Apple iMac Retina 4K -21.5" - Intel Quad Core i5 - 3.1GHz - 8GB - 1TB, at £199, erase, and reinstall high sierra to match my iMac, then clone everything across.

Do you think this can be done if the replacement iMac is intel (I assume mine isn’t because of the age of it)?

If not, then 1080p it is! 🙂

Once again, thanks for your reply

Hi Mark,

I haven't used HitFilm or even heard of it but i'm not the creative kind anymore.

I have used iMacs since 2006 with the first Intel model. I used iPhoto, Aperture, iMovie, Final Cut and so on to make short episodes about my friends and I Mountain Biking. I made 300+ ,learning as i went.

I too now have a 2017 21.5" 4K iMac with a Intel Quad Core i5 - 3.0 GHz - 16 GB RAM - 1TB SSD which i bought on Gumtree for £130! LOT of 2017 models on the site now. From £100 with no details to £400 with a lot of details. That's a bit much i think...........

I don't do anything on it really as it's an upgrade from one of many 2011 iMacs i have (and still do) owned, repaired and sold. Really 2006-2011 models due to not loving Apples obsession about a "5mm at the edge" computer. I wasn't loving the inside of them or the cost.

I lost everything in a fire. Every photo i ever took. All Videos i made on dvds that at first took so long to edit and transfer. There were stacks of 50 and 100 discs in the room, Photos including my 7x5 inch physical picture from 35mm cameras. Every one of my 11,000 photographs that i scanned in to my 06' iMac using a £400 scanner that i bought new and sold three weeks later for £325. Epson i think. I just went for the best at the time. But computers, old internal drives, external ones, all my cameras and camcorders and all the cards and tapes. And my Volvo 850R Turbo Estate in lime green that took 8 years to build, carried 6 bikes at 154mph. It's only stuff right?

I use Final Cut Pro, motion, Compressor and a whole host of the latest and newest Applications that the App Store advertises and it'll appear on this machine like magic. I don't use them. It just looks good.

I think i tried to install High Sierra when i got this 2017 model to then update it with anything i had on it but it wouldn't work even though HS can use APFS. Reading the communities it's the fact that it has newer Hardware and software and it isn't built for the past which is just perfect for me as i have none. I have two 2011 iMacs right here with 1TB Crucial SSDs and 32GB of Crucial RAM as Its the best iMac in my opinion plus i have a 'few' mountain biking dvds from the good ole days. 2004-2018. Events are crap but some of the films being made are cracking.

If you take one thing from this, in fact take two things the second being this is the most effort I've shown for 6 years or so on anything. The first is NO! Nobody can refurbish an Apple product.

When i repaired, replaced parts or put together iPhones and iMacs they sold as they were, used but opened, cleaned, tested, replaced with improved parts etc.

On eBay you can class a iMac as Refurbished is you give the casing and screen a wipe with a moist cloth. I'm not kidding, i had this massive argument about it as i needed parts and i bought iMacs which over the years and it became clear that people were not opening them up to install a new hard drive or add RAM because eBay got lazy and refurbished meant less and less just like their quality control of the listings, the actual goods, their location. 20 year on eBay, 7000+ all positive FB. Ended up being a big seller of Original cinema posters for the UK, Europe, Australia, US. Anywhere there was a cool poster or a warehouse full of them. Lot of money but then market crash and posters weren't as wanted as before.

Well that's me set for the long day ahead..............:(

Hey James

thanks for that! Saved me some dosh there 😂

Hitfilm pro 4 (the version I’ve got), is an editor and compositor that can handle 3d models and has an incredible particle emitter, and a host of vfx tools etc.

i can use some of the hitfilm “plugins” in motion, but as I’ve not used all of this since 2012-14, and I’m playing catch up on relearning it all.

im so frustrated as i put off using this setup for years as life got in the way, and now that i can actually do stuff cos I have the time, ive been scuppered by software needing different iOS’s, and hardware compatibility between devices. Argh! 😂😂

I’ll just have to stick with 1080p, as that seems to work(ish), I do have hit and miss issues with the QuickTime format not working on my 10th gen iPad, which I’m currently using for editing with LumaFusion for convenience (wanted to do it all in hitfilm)

thank you again 👍
