If you have forgotten your MacBook Neo login password and cannot reset it, while macOS Recovery also gives PKDownloadError 8 when you try to reinstall macOS Tahoe and Disk Utility will not erase the internal disk, the next step depends on whether you need to preserve the data.

To start an Apple silicon Mac in macOS Recovery, shut down the Mac completely ( do not use restart ).

Press and continue holding the power button until you see Loading startup options or the startup-options screen.

Select Options, then select Continue. This starts macOS Recovery. Apple documents this procedure in How to start up from macOS Recovery.

If you need the files, do not erase the Mac.

From macOS Recovery, look for the available password-reset options. Depending on the Mac's configuration, Apple may require your Apple Account credentials or FileVault recovery key.

See Apple's instructions for a forgotten Mac password.

If you do not need the files, you can consider Erase Mac in Recovery, if that option is available.

Erasing permanently deletes the Mac's local data.

If you instead use Reinstall macOS from Recovery, Apple states that reinstalling macOS does not normally remove your apps or personal data.

See Apple's macOS Recovery instructions and how to reinstall macOS.

Because Disk Utility is also refusing to erase the disk, open Disk Utility from Recovery and select View >> Show All Devices.

Check whether the internal storage device appears. If it does, note the exact error reported when you attempt to erase it.

If Disk Utility cannot see or erase the disk, Apple indicates that the Mac might require service. See Apple's Disk Utility guidance.

For PKDownloadError 8, try the Recovery installation again using a reliable broadband connection.

Apple notes that some network configurations can interfere with macOS Recovery installation. The error code by itself does not establish the cause of the failure.

At this point, the three most useful details are the exact Disk Utility error, whether the internal storage appears in Disk Utility, and whether you need to preserve the files. Those details will determine the appropriate next step.

One small but important distinction: do not release the power button immediately when the Mac starts. Continue holding it until the startup options appear; otherwise, you may simply start the Mac normally.

Welcome and thank you for sharing your concerns, latifah33. 😉

If you have forgotten your Mac login password; after trying three attempts, you should find an option to reset your password with your Apple Account.

From there, you simply follow the prompts and your Mac should simply restart like normal.

NOTE: You may need to sign back into iCloud and other services after the successful login.
